Ok, so i went Plasma shopping today, actually browsing, i went to game and Hifi Corporation, now im sitting with a challenge, Game has a 42" Full HD Logik plasma for R5000, Hifi Corp has a 50" Sansui plasma (HD Ready) for R6999 and a Byd:sign 42" full HD LCD for R5000, i cant decide, i leaning towards the Logik as it has 3 year guarantee, does anyone have experience with any of these makes?

i am a huge Plasma fan, but today i was quite impressed with the LCD's (on a sports channel)......But anyway, As i was searching the world wide web i came across catsdigital, they are selling 40" Sony FullHD Baravia3 LCDs for R6000, and the reviews are great...

Please give me your recommendation

Anyway i will be using it primarily for movies, HD and SD (no sports or xbox)

6K-ish budget ?
 
I've looked at the cheaper options and found that Logick is HiSense, and Sansui is ByD:sign (white labeled to prevent you from shopping). I got a HiSense 32" and happy with it, cannot complain for the price.

I saw the 50" your refering to and was blown away by the picture quality for the price. I know Plasma has its cons but on 50" it beats the crap out of LCD.

So I would say if your going for Plasma go the 50" else get the 42".
 
Had a look at some Sansui sets today, and I must say; very impressive. I'm fairly brand-conscious though, so I'd never buy it, but they look pretty good to me.

Consider also waiting around for another special? I know that Game had a special last week or so for a PS42C430 + HD PVR decoder for like R6999 or something.
 
Currently I would rather go for the cheaper brands as they seem to be best value for money right now. I understand the technical aspects of a screen but it makes no cents (pun intended) that some "beter" branded models are twice the price as the "budget" models. We are talking about thousands of rands and just a few hundred.

I have to agree with this... To a point...

There comes a time when many cheaper brands, even if they are using a lot of the same internal electronics as "branded" sets, are lacking in features. The reason for this? The aforementioned internals are sometimes based on previous generation tech used in "branded" sets.

Now, I'm not saying this is the case for ALL "cheaper" sets. Not by any means.

The law of diminishing returns certainly applies here... The extra R2000, say, is likely to bring you very little in the grand scheme of things, but it's up to the individual whether the extras are worth it or not.
 
I would not go for the cheaper brands. Unless you need 1080p? I would go for the tried, tested and trusted Samsung 42" HD Ready plasma at R5600ish. I don't need 1080p, plus I understand that from 2.5m+ viewing distance it's almost always impossible to discern between 720p/1080p.
 
House & Home have a Samsung plasma 42" HD Ready for R5789. A good balance, I think, between a brand name TV and one that was thrown over the Great Wall.

Agree. Feature creep is a side effect of all tech items. There is no canned response on giving advice on the go cheap or go expensive when deciding brands.

I've also seen on many forign forums that consumers or often more happy with brands we percieve as been substandard and they will often complain about the brands we consider better. I think in a market (unlike ours) where the cost difference between brands is only a McDonalds Happy Meal, consumers are more focused on the quality of the individual product/model than what we are.

There are very good deals on HD Ready TV's out there with lots of completely satisfied owners on this forum. Don't overlook them if that is what your budget allows or if you just don't want to spend more than necessary.
 
My opinion is buy anything except the logik. I went to game and the demo model had 20% of its pixels missing/broken. All nice and green.

I disagree again here especially with TVs. Reason being that I intend to keep my TV for at least 5 years so I would rather spend a little bit extra and be happy with the choice I make then after 2 years start looking around as I compromised initially when buying.

If I was too buy say 10 TVs for a bar where they will be abused and the saving in taking a cheaper brand will substantial because I'm buying bulk then it's a different story.
 
Since you are reading this, it probably means you like reading reviews on the net, checking out what other people think about the models you are considering etc. This doesn't end once you buy a set ... it is always nice to read up more about your new toy, see callibration settings other people are using etc. Stick to the big brands ... other countries have the same/similar models. Pay that little bit extra now, you will never regret afterwards that you went with the bigger brand ...
