You can get pirate DVDs and blu-ray movies in the street in London. Was in Petticoat Lane recently and there was a table full of Bollywood movies and also many film western titles. Slumdog Millionaire and Phantom of the Opera, etc on blu-ray for ÂŁ5 a pop. I was looking through the selection and two bobbies walked past, so I said to one, "what do you do about these pirates?" Stall owner looked daggers at me, but the cop looked at me as if I was speaking Gujerati and walked on. After that, stall holder (in his Tamil accent) told me about his starving wife and kids in Bangladesh and how he wanted desperately to go straight, but had to accumulate some money and was being forced to sell the stuff. So the police there don't really care, its too much trouble to open a case.

Why should be any difference here? Now and then at the Muizenberg Flea Market you see Customs officers confiscating fake perfume, handbags and watches. This action stems directly from a complaint from the importer, they never initiate a raid by themselves.

Say what? :wtf:

Clearly this guy just got a seriously big gift from the BSA/FPB/whichever organisation for making this speech. Either that, or he's tripping.

Buying illegal goods is as close to murder as stopping on a red line.

Headlines that I would like to see:

SAPS declares war on MURDER

SAPS declares war on CORRUPTION

SAPS declares war on RAPISTS

SAPS declares war on THEFT

SAPS declares war on CABLE THIEVES

/not this bloody shyte!

SAPS need to distinguish the difference between counterfeit and copyright. The two, legally, require separate courses of action.

and so many cops that I know that pirate themselves... who cares! just don't buy it, get it yourself online!, if its that good, buy it, if its not, watch it, delete it!... simple!.

The SAPS does this every holiday season. Then the rest of the year we see vendors on the corners openly selling Chinese DVD's of the latest music or films.

I guess it's just for show to remain in the WTO.

I bought a PS2 game in the USA for $10 about 5 years ago. Exchange rate was +- 10-1 so the game basically cost R100. When I got back here to SA, that same game cost R600. How is it possible that the price could grow by R500? Taxes and more taxes!! Import taxes sales taxes royalty taxes profit taxes and and and. So my feeling, go !@#$%^&*().

Yes, I don't get how things can be so much more expensive in this country! Even if our use base is smaller than the US or other country it can't cost that much extra!

I've been buying a few things off ebay - those items that don't get 'lost' work out very cheap. Got something the other day for $6 - here it costs R400! Local prices are mental and as long as they stay mental I'll import/pirate wherever possible.

By next year this time. We will see pirate blu rays in South Africa.
And look at it 25gb 1 blu ray blank. Jst imagine how many cam copies can fit on on blank lol! I feel so sorry for all the stupid people. Someone will say that "Hey i bought a blu ray with 24 latest flims." Thats the future of piracy!

Don't they have better things to go after... Like perhaps the person stealing my TV or the rapists and murders?

Last I knew we have priorities for a reason, hey if a guy on the side of the road is selling fake DVD's and earning some cash, it sure is a lot better than him breaking into someone's house...

But then again it is all "wrong" according to the law and I know most people here are breaking it anyways :P

My R2 (inflation is a bitch)

You don't understand business. Why on earth will they sell 24 movies on 1 disc when they can sell 24 movies on 24 discs at a higher profit margin?

I agree they should clamp down on people selling this stuff. But really, there is a huge underprivileged market that cannot afford the real deal, nor can they afford ADSL to just dl it themselves. But this type of stuff should really not be the concern of the SAPS as you guys said, this type of thing is nothing compared to the real problems in our country.

On a serious note, why go for the pirates and allow the ninja's to run rampant?
