How do you guys get the most out of your refund? Do you use services like TaxTim or do it yourselves?

With the first SMS of the season received from SARS, it's time to fire up a new thread in preparation for 1 July. I'm locked and loaded with supporting documents and just need to bug HR for my IRP5...

Mod note: please unsticky the 2016 thread and replace with this new one if you wish.

I've never understood why SARS asks filers for their IRP5's when they already have a copy of it in their system. Makes no sense.

Exactly what I have been wondering.
There is a certain amount of information that is known already and can be avoided.

If only they would use some of the artificial intelligence that they possess in SARS.

Yip. The data that your employer uses to generate IRP5's is the exact same data they send to SARS every month in the EMP201 return and bi-annually in the EMP501 returns. So to then on top of that ask you to supply it is stupid, especially seeing as when you open up your income tax return it already has all the data prepopulated for you.

Was hoping to file mine on the first but just realized I have not received any of my tax paperwork other than the medical aid one. About 4 or 5 outstanding. Checked the delivery date of last years emails and they seem to dribble in over the course of July. Companies should really work harder at finalising clients tax info before the season starts. If my medical aid can do it I don't see why the likes of PPS and BOE can't.

What are you claiming from PPS? If it is loss of income, be aware that it is no longer tax deductible.

So Tax season opens tomorrow!

I see they have noted downtime tonight on their site between 17:00 and 12:00. Wonder if this is to stop the people who filed on the evening before last year? As some of them had already received their returns.

It's a Friday. SARS releases updates over weekends and the weekend before filing season used to be a big one.

I have Capital Gains Tax to pay.

Luckily my previous years RA contributions that have rolled over and my increased 2016 contributions will cancel out half the CGT amount owed. I will only calculate and save, but not submit, I have until 24 November 2017 to build up the required funds (or see what bonus is like in Sept) and submit

Good to know :) I have filed the last 2 years as soon as possible to get my Medical Aid refund back :)

Have plans of hopefully paying off the remainder of my car (not much to go now).
