So I went from SARS owing me the usual amount to me owing them more than a month's salary!

Seems they invalidated my travel claims again...happened last year and when I resubmitted the exact same documents they accepted it.

Always a struggle...I'm starting to think that I should give up doing it myself as the stress of dealing with their ineptitude isn't worth it.

Anyone that can recommend a good tax practitioner in the PE area?

I saw an article in one of the papers this morning about SARS losing a whole bunch of documentation around travel stuff, which will need to be resubmitted.

It can take up to 30 days, according to the chap on the phone earlier. I submitted supporting documentation on the 14th, still no update on anything.

Well, I'm expecting a bit of scratch, so hope their mathemematics are on par.
Don't want to owe them next year because they cocked up this year.

But how can you show you didn't have an income for example?

I would think that it would be up to SARS to proof that you had an income (as opposed to you having to proof that you did not have an income). But it seems anything is possible

SARS is matching PAYE payments (in prior years) to returns submitted using Individual Income Tax numbers. That is how they are identifying individual taxpayers who did not submit returns in a specific year. So the current lot of penalties and interest charges are all for people who are in the system already

Has anyone received their SARS refund after audit finalized yet? Received my second IT34 on the 20th and statement of account still not showing that payment will be made.... Really frustrating..

You can request a SOA on efiling. Should get it fairly quick

Check that you don't have a special stopper on your account.

Thank you, appreciate all the comments. I have called SARS to check about the special stopper and was told that everything is fine and could take up to 60 days for SARS to refund.. Not sure if the person I spoke to was the most clued up though.. Submitted my return on the 1st of July, supporting documents on the 4th and had to submit the vehicle purchase agreement on the 10th, received second IT34 on the 20th with no changes made and now still waiting for my refund.. SOA still shows refund amount no eft information loaded yet. Maybe I should just give them call again to double check regarding the special stopper.. Thanks again was just wondering if anyone else is experiencing the same problem.

Put some of my savings into a RA, it's amazing how much tax money you can get back. Even if your RA does not grow a lot, the tax money makes it a great investment. Obviously still need savings for emergencies etc.

The Annuity (4006) section now wants the total contributions including the numbers from the IRP5's BUT there the code is 3610... should that be included or is it only applicable where the IRP5 shows a 4006 code? Someone did not think this change through...

Put the tax refund related to your RA back into the RA. Then you will see decent RA growth as well (and get a bit of tax back on that top-up again next year)

So your employer puts money into a Retirement Annuity for you? Not a pension fund or a provident fund?

I assume since it's in your IRP5 your don't have to reveal more about it in that section and just your private RA contributions, those coming from your bank account.
