I have a middle-aged relative who has never had a tax number. Is it necessary to have a tax number? And how would she get a tax number if required?

Yes it's necessary and they can register at a SARS branch or have their employer do it.

A bit unrelated, so sorry about this...

doing tax through a tax practitioner for the first time as now have a rental unit we claiming for... building and maintenance costs to do with the flat are deductible, though wondering if any repairs and maintenance costs to ones own property is deductible at all. i.e. is it necessary to keep all receipts for money spent on ones own property?

This is the reply I got from the tax guy, though reading it, it sounds like he used a wrong word which totally changes everything to add to my confusion as I am a total idiot in these sorts of things my in-laws are adamant that they have always claimed costs from maintenance to there property

the reply:
One needs to keep the slips for the repairs & maintenance done to the leased property as this reduces the rental income received. The repairs and maintenance done to one’s own property can be claimed unless it is a capital repairs & maintenance, the slips need to be kept as these capital repairs are offset any capital gains in the future.

Don't feel too bad, tax laws are designed to be complicated.

Finally managed to file today. Had some issues with incorrect details on my IRP5.
My ITA34 says I'm "Selected for audit". Should I wait for further communication or can I just send my supporting documents so long? How do I upload my documents?

Nevermind, a wild Upload Supporting Documents section appeared

When it comes to rental property and claiming the property tax, do you upload every month's municipal account as supporting documents?

one is sufficient, the calculation is done per day so SARS should be able to figure it out

Received my completion letter after verification (that took exactly 21 working days). So it took 21 days to send me a letter stating that there is no adjustments. :wtf:

Took them 28 days to send mine - pretty much exactly the time it took last year and the year before that. But remember - they have to go through all of your documents and check them against what you put in your return. That's the whole point of the audit verification.

I filed on the 3rd of July, got my assessment with x amount, a few days later got an additional assessment with the original amount reduced. Reduced amount paid on the 11th of July. This all happened while I was leave. When I got back to work I received an email from our Salaries dept saying that there was a discrepancy on our IRP5s. Called SARS and was advised to submit a NOO. This was done on the 11th of July. Had to submit supporting docs for a 2nd time. Received outcome from NOO on the 26th of September with a reduced assessment (way more than the original assessment)and was requested to submit supporting docs again (3rd time). Received completion letter yesterday, 26 October 2017. Called SARS this morning and was told that my refund could take up to 60 days, this after I have already been waiting for almost 90 days plus. So the entire process is taking roughly 5 months???? Unbelievable!!
