Hey guys. Tax noob here with a question very late in the game.

Background: I earn under the threshold at which Sars requires a tax return to be filed, so been ignoring it. Until I read that I should file if SARS owes me money.

I contributed to an RA during the previous tax year. Is it possible that there could be a refund for that?

Refund Due

Hi Guys,

Silly question, once SARS has paid, does the status on efiling change? I know on the right and side it shows how much is owed, does this change in any way once payment has been made? TIA:eek:

Excuse me if this has been asked before, but this thread is too long to read through the whole thing. I need some advise with my tax return and investments.
I have investments with EASY EQUITIES. Got my tax certificate from their website but the form is so damn confusing. I don't know what goes where on my tax return. I have some tax free investments and a normal investment. Can someone please explain what some of the columns refer to on my Easy Equities tax certificate?

Yes, Easy Equities tax reports leave a lot to be desired. They don't list the SARS source codes. Nor do they format the information so that all the values are listed under their respective categories as expected by SARS. Their profit/loss amounts seem to be off when using SARS definition of Capital Flow = Proceeds - Base Cost.

So its best to use a spreadsheet and add everything up yourself.

The requirements to not file is not only based on earning below the threshold, but also if you you do not have any allowable deductions.

As you were contributing to an RA, you are required to submit a tax return. I would submit as there can be refunds due to you.

Thanks, will do so.

So as mentioned previously, still waiting on my IRP 5 from my previous employer. They changed accountants or something so couldn't get the original one to do it or some such. Anyway, found out today after much prodding and threats of going to SARS that they are liquidating and SARS will have been informed.

Not that clued up on SARS-related stuff...I requested that in writing so I can go do an affidavit and submit to SARS, but what are my other options/ best course of advance here?

I don't want to be penalized for something that's out of my hands.

Not good news.

Do you know if they submitted and paid the monthly EMP201. If it was submitted and paid, then it's just a matter of getting the EMP501 submitted and generating the IRP5 certificates. Even if they are liquidated, this should be possible if the monthly submissions were submitted and paid.

If the submitted the EMP201 but failed to make the payment, then it gets a bit more complicated.

I have a suspicion that they did not pay over the PAYE that was deducted from employees.

Hmmm. I have no idea about that but I will enquire, thank you. Hopefully it's as simple as that. AFAIK, the accounting firm handling the books wasn't paid, hence not doing the IRP5s etc.

I've changed my address on my returns every year for the last 2 - 3 years. I never needed to change it elsewhere.

If you’re an existing taxpayer:
•you can log in to eFiling if you’re a registered eFiler, and complete the Registration, Amendment and Verification form (RAV01) where you can apply for additional tax subscriptions and update all registered details excluding Name and ID/Registered name and company registration number & your nature of entity. Click here for a guide on how to complete the RAV01.
•should you need to update these details you will have to visit your nearest SARS branch. Remember the required relevant material (supporting documents).
•Or visit your nearest SARS branch for any additional tax registrations or amendments to your registered particulars.

If you don’t get your IRP5:

1. If you kept all your salary advices for the year (in accordance with the tax year March to February) you must fill in your returns according to these monthly salary advices. These submitted returns will then be referred for audit via SARS Service Manager. On audit you will be requested to supply supporting documentation which you can submit in the form of the monthly salary advices.

2. If you did not keep all your salary advices you will be required to compile a statement of your income and deductions (per year in accordance with the tax year March to February) and have the statement certified (affidavit). You can then submit returns for the year in accordance with the certified statement. On submission the returns will be referred for audit and you will be requested to supply supporting documentation. The affidavit will then serve as the supporting documentation.

So as per usual, I did my return late (one day before due date).
And I have been selected for a SARS audit.
I really don't know why - I have a single employer, no other income, no interest earning investments, no Capital Gains, no funnies regarding my shares (REITS, etc.). Just your basic "average poor dude" surviving from day to day.
My submissions (like every year) result in either a shortfall or surplus of less than R10.00 every time, leaving my account balance with SARS virtually nil (my employer does a good tax job). This year - they owe me R5.99.
Why all of a sudden am I selected for audit? Nothing has really changed in my life in the 10 years of E-Filing!
Just wondering why----

Anyone with insight as to the reasoning behind this?

Hi folks, I received this notice from SARS this morning.

We refer to the verification of the assessment for the 2017 tax period. Please note that no adjustment has been made to this assessment.

Am I off the hook?
