Have you ever received a refund before, BlackMamba? It's possible that your employer is giving you your tax credit for the medical aid directly with each payslip, so there would be zero owing to you in that case. Because you've incurred some extra medical expenses then I guess you'd only get a fraction of that back on tax, which might explain the R77 back (off R5 000 odd).

I really find it odd that I only get R77 for so much I spent.

Yes in 2015 I received R750 with on R600 spent not claimed from the scheme

Any help please.

My medical aid contribution are paid by the employer, I have spent over R10000 on paying doctors and didn't claim it from the scheme, my medical aid certificate shows that portion pain on claims is R5060 yet sars calculation say -77.
Am I doing it wrong or what

If you didn't claim it from the scheme how do you expect the medical aid to know about it?

That is your own calculation then and should be ON TOP of theirs with the necessary evidence to prove it.

Where do I check if I have been selected for verification? If I open the ITA34, it just gives me my refund figure - where do I find the results page?

It's near the bottom of the first page of the assessment. It shows a Y or N in the Audit column.

Stupid Chrome. When I clicked the link to show the ITA34 it just showed me my refund figure. When I finally realised I needed to disable the in built PDF reader, clicking the link again offered me the PDF to download and then view which showed my full assessment and Y for verification. Others will do well to keep this in mind when using Chrome browser.

Also, new this year, SARS wants to know who your medical aid is with, your membership number and also for a Retirement Annuity, who it is held with and what the policy number is. This detailed info was not required last year.

As mentioned earlier in the thread, Discovery Health clients should see their member number and number of dependents per month pre-pulled into the return, but I had to add annual membership fee spend and out of pocket manually from the info in my medical aid tax certificate.

Even then it doesn't show right after submission.

Will probably show in the Notice of Assessment that will be issued later?

The "calculate" function (in the IRT12 - the return) does not take into account any assessed losses, carry over amounts, additional tax, provisional tax payments, etc.

These amounts will only be show on the Notice of Assessment (ITA34) after the ITR12 (the return) is submitted.

That is correct, if your employer paid your medical scheme contributions to your medical scheme on your behalf, the amount will appear on your IRP5/IT3 (a) certificate but SARS will not use this amount in calculating your assessment. You must complete the medical expenses section on your ITR12 using the information on your medical scheme tax certificate.

Also, if you want to claim deductions for retirement annuity fund contributions you made, you must provide the individual policy number and the name of the insurer / fund of each, most likely for audit purposes

You probably got that R750 for some other reason in 2015.
Back to 2017, R10k is not going to get you much, if anything. There is a lot of factors to consider.

Thanks, I see I didn't wait long enough for full notice of assessment to load.

2016 - Notice of Assessment says R38 000 in RA contributions carried forward to next year.
2017 - Notice of Assessment says R1 in RA contributions carried forward from previous year.

Lodge a dispute?

Last year I got 26k back because of my car allowance. This year everything stays the same except the 6% increase in salary but after the calculation I owe Sars almost 4k.

How can there be such a drastic change?

I just downloaded mine from Old Mutual's website. Was pretty easy to register and get to it, just for my company-subscribed RA.

If the company paid for it why do you need it?

Should have been on your IRP5.

I have checked the car allowance and did the calculation for the car allowance and got to the same deduction so I dont think its that. I think it's something to do with the pension deduction

I did my return and only got R2k more than last year although I drove more than double the business kilometers. Nothing else changed so does this seem normal?
Depends on what your allowance is. Your deduction is limited to your allowance, so if you were close to maxing your allowance last year, the extra business km's for this year might not make much of a difference. If I were you I would review the travel allowance.

With your car type and business km's, your deduction might be R80k for example, but if your annual allowance is only R60k, your deduction is limited to R60k.

When trying to do my 2017 return, I get the following message whe trying to do a calculation:

There is a discrepancy in the amounts completed, please ensure that you completed the correct amounts.
HINTS:
The 'Total contributions for this year of assessment' must be equal to the sum of 'Contributions made this policy

Has anyone encountered this issue? If so, do you know how to resolve this?
