SARS E-Filing 2017

Okay, so the ultimate noob question...

What is the purpose of doing a tax return? Why do you get/owe money to SARS if you've been paying tax?

I started working in Jan 2017. I pay PAYE. I did not invest in TFSA (yet). I do not pay medical aid (covered by parents). Why should I still file a tax return? Someone told me its because I paid for 2 months in the previous tax year... Is that correct?

The SARS financial year ends on the last day of February.

Why you should file? You probably will get all that PAYE that was paid back if you earned less than R75 000 in total in those 2 months, and still a large potion if you earned more than R75 000 in those 2 months. HR would probably have deducted PAYE at the normal rate for that monthly amount.

Any tips on how to maximise refund due to me due to use of company car with provided fuel. Apparently , my company taxes us at the maximum rate for company car and the idea was that we should get money back at tax return time ... I did not know this.

I do about 18k a year and about 4K business mileage so thought I was precluded from making a claim as I did 14k private mileage.

So, I need to build a log book, I sorta can do this as I have been keeping mileage counts, etc

Another question can I retrospectively try to get money back for the last two years where I did not claim properly? Just for my knowledge - I Will most likely not do so as I don't want an audit.

Random hypothetical question to a pro:

If a husband and wife are married out of community of property with an ANC contract, is money flow between them exempt of any tax and need to declare on a return?

EXAMPLE: Say wife gives husband R5k a month via EFT from her salary - is this tax free for the husband and/or does he need to worry about this annual R60k at tax return time?

Donations between spouses are always tax free, its on their site in some obscure location (under inheritance stuff iirc)

Is it just me still awaiting tax calculation results? How the f do i submit without knowing what the outcome is first?

Wanted to file mine on Monday, but they need me to get an updated "Confirmation of Diagnosis of Disability" form completed by a Specialist again, I forgot that every 5 yrs the same old story.

I've luckily never had to submit a log book. I have also noticed that it makes no real difference on your rebate. If they request a logbook in the future, I might consider not going through the trouble of submitting mileage.

Haven't done the exercise this year or last but with previous returns if I said I had no logbook I would need to pay money back to SARS, changing to yes I do have a logbook meant a payout from SARS.
