It now says ::refunds is equal to x and then other is equal to 0 and balance is 0 - does that mean they paid me ( and in still waiting and how long will this take) and do you think they just 0 it?

Tax Free Investments section

I'm not sure what to fill in under some of the fields in the Tax Free Investments section.

Net return on investment - What do they want here? Am I supposed to take "closing market value", subtract R30,000 (contribution for the year), and subtract "opening market value" in order to get this figure?

Dividends - my statement from EasyEquities lists local dividends, foreign dividends, and REIT dividends. These are all handled separately on the form for normal investments, but here, it just says "dividends". Must I tally up all three categories into one figure?

It's really weird to me that they want all of this info for a tax-free investment - I mean, who cares what the net return on your investment was? It's unrealised if there's been no selling. They don't ask this for your taxable investments.

Same story here:

1. My calculations says they owe me R30000. Got audited
2. They throw out all my rental expenses and says I owe them R24000

which rental expenses were not deducted?

I've never had rental expenses denied as deductions, and I was audited for six years in a row.

I see you are supposed to be able to change your address on efiling but for the life of my I can't figure out where

when you actually complete the return your address details need to verified, outside of this I'm not aware of how to change the address

You mean i simply change my address and it'll ask me to verify?

when you fill in the return you need to verify that your details are correct (since its already completed), and if they are not you must correct them before you "sign" that the details are correct.

Filed my return on the 14th of Sept and was selected for audit... still awaiting completion letter... I noticed those who filed in July got responses in around 21 days, wandering if it will be the same for Sept returns. Will wait and see what happens this week...

A friend of mines and I are disagreeing right now. She is not on myBB.
She says he heard SARS adverts on radio a few months ago saying there were certain situations where one did not have to complete a return . She says she earned less than 200k Gross as a new healthcare practioner for the last financial year due being pregnant and not working for 7 months of the year. At the places she works, she gets the gross payment and not a net amount like I get as a salaried employee .. so she claims she doesn't need to pay any PAYE and neither does she have to submit a return. Is that true? It seems wrong. I told her she needs to submit .. but she feels she doesn't have too. Who is right?

She most definitely has to pay tax. As for filing a tax return, see here: http://www.sars.gov.za/TaxTypes/PIT/Pages/Do-you-need-to-submit-a-return.aspx

I made a booboo, after I submitted my documents (they requested it), I noticed the IRP5 didn't go through.

I phoned them....the ONLY way to add it is to physically take it to one of their offices to be scanned in. OFFS....how retarded is that?

Sitting in the same boat, except I'm not in the country at the moment...

she can tell that story to SARS if or when they eventually get to her, I wouldn't stress about what other people do about their tax affairs

That is stupid, it used to be that if you missed a doc all you need to do is revise up your return and it allowed you to resubmit the docs.

You are right. She actually owes SARS income tax if she earned more than R75 000 in the tax year.

http://www.sars.gov.za/TaxTypes/PIT/Pages/default.aspx

Who is it for?
You are liable to pay income tax if you earn more than:

For the 2017 year of assessment (1 March 2016 - 28 February 2017)
•R75 000 if you are younger than 65 years.

She might get away with it for a while, but eventually SARS will klap her when they get around to it.

Went to SARS Bellville at 14h45, took 10 minutes (although the queue was out the door). Friendly staff. DODGY AS HELL outside....very scaly characters hanging around there. Nice smell of marijuana in the air.

I told them their system is stupid. Asked them if they could reset the thing, "NO". Lesson learned, be VERY CAREFUL when submitting.

Lucky - I'm trying to organize a tax practitioner to do it for me so that I don't have to use my tax return bonus for a flight back to SA :p
