SARS E-Filing 2021/22

Did you guys have to do anything after it was reversed to get it resolved?

Yes.

First step would be to phone SARS. Ask them why the refund was reversed. Make notes of what the agent says.

If a verification request has been issued. Attend to it within 21 business days.

If there is a stopper on your bank account follow these procedures.

Make a booking using the above link. Select these options:

The agent will phone you back or send you a MS Teams link for the date you have scheduled your appointment. Attend it. Wait a few days and voila. Confirm with the agent that the stopper has been lifted. Make it verbally clear. These calls are recorded. Use it to your advantage.

No nothing at first...was expecting to be paid tomorrow and now received this.

I must supply this now...

If you do not find any error in your return, we would appreciate it if you can send us documentation in support of all your income declared, deductions and exemptions claimed. For example: -

Employment contract/letter of employment from the employer with the entity letterhead stating the following: -
Physical address of the entity -
Contact number of Human Resources to confirm employment -
PAYE Reference Number of the entity where the employee is employed. -
IRP5/IT3(a) employee income tax certificates in respect of remuneration income and lump sums from your employer/pension fund or provident fund or retirement fund -
3 months' Bank Statement showing the Salary Transfer -
Salary slip for 12 months period or lesser if employment is less than a year

WTF
anyone else requested to supply this?

Ive never had this. I had to do some other verification a while ago, but wasnt this hectic.
Eventually they said I need to come into the branch, I waited in queues only to show them the same stuff I had emailed. It was all proof of address and stuff

Hi thanks a lot for this, I'll give it a go.
My verification has been completed, just waiting for the refund now which has been reversed

No problem.

If you say that your verification has been completed by SARS, I am under the assumption that they have issued you with a "completion letter" verifying that the review on your 2022 return has been concluded.

The letter's body will include the following:

If the refund was reversed after SARS issued the completion letter, then SARS have most likely put a stopper on the refund for which you will have to follow the process I detailed above.

I have received exactly the same request for information. Its the first time that I have received such a request. Also the first time in many years that I have been selected for verification/audit.

I can say from personal experience that being selected for verification/audit has nothing to do with the amount of refund.... I have been refunded in excess of R60k for several consecutive years due to claiming for the use of a company provided vehicle. This time around I have worked for only 7 months in the previous tax year for a small company, only getting a R5k refund and BOOM... selected for audit/verification and asked for a long list of docs

From what I can gather with the info provided, It appears that you have been issued with standard verification letters. SARS's system does this based on historical information and risk of misstatement on the return. Eg. Material differences such as a huge increase in medical aid claims or a new business venture or employment.

I would phone SARS and request the agent to inform you which documents you need to submit. Use the call back function to assist you.

If that is still unclear, submit documentary proof for everything that you have disclosed on your income tax return. (IRP5's, RA's Medical Aid, whatever else).

You have 21 business days to attend to the verification request from the date of issue. If you fail to adhere to the timeline, SARS will issue a final demand to submit supporting documentation. If you fail there, SARS will raise an additional assessment which you will have to object against if you don't agree with the outcome (and this takes long). What I'm trying to say is - don't delay in attending to verification requests.

ok so are you saying I must supply even stuff they did not ask for? Like my logbook and Medical Aid Charges? I am happy to submit them as I have had them ready but Audit was not required. I was about to be paid when they sent the verification letter as above.

Thanks that's great advice. I filled my return on Monday 11 July and submitted docs on the same day and was allocated to an official/assessor a few hours later.

I then realized that I didn't submit "ALL" of the supporting docs requested and decided to request a correction on efilling. I resubmitted the return with ALL the docs and was allocated an assessor again within a an hour. All of this happened on Monday 11 July... Now we wait...

I would give them all they ask for an MORE... When I followed this process/method in the past, my returns were verified fairly quickly with no comebacks or further requests for information.

Lucky are those that are subject to verification and have been assigned an Assessor.

Some of us are out here waiting since 28 June i.e. Day 11/21 with no movement/change.

Correct.

You can confirm the specific documentation via the call center. You mention logbook and medical aid - this is most likely the area of focus for SARS in your case. IRP5 etc is standard and done by your employer. But get the document from your payroll dept.

Your logbook MUST be in the SARS acceptable format. If it's not, you risk having your travel claim disallowed.

If you're too lazy to phone the call center, you need to submit everything to substantiate every amount on your return. This is rule of thumb. Don't let SARS make decisions for you.

Ensure your documentation complies with the SARS requirement. The onus lies on you.

I would not have followed the method you have outlined to submit all supporting documents. You have essentially had an "audit" assigned to yourself and not a standard "review". And thus delayed the process. So your return will be looked at in more detail than usual. However, if it's basic with IRP5, MA, RA, Logbook etc. then it should still be fine.

Do not request for correction unless you have disclosed balances on the return incorrectly.

I would have just submitted the additional supporting documents via this link:

You would have gotten a case number on your initial verification letter.

Shucks, I tried to submit additional docs but couldn't... I didn't notice the thread on this link. Anyway, although the list of required information is long, there are no special or extraordinary claims to verify.... Simple IRP5, Payslips, Bank Confirmation Letter, ID, Proof of Address, Proof of Employment etc...Once an assessor goes through the docs, it should pass quite easily.

Once the 21 business days have lapsed. Do every taxpayer and tax practitioner a favour.

1. Phone the SARS call center to escalate your case. (Verification not completed)
2. Wait 5 business days for a resolution. A SARS agent should contact you. (They most likely won't)
3. After the 5 business days in point 2 has lapsed. Submit a complaint via the SARS portal. Select "Unresolved service/operational matter"

Then I wouldn't stress about it.

If you review exceeds the 21 business days time. (21 business days after the last date when you submitted the documents), please follow the complaints process detailed above.

It assists every one of us and it helps get SARS in order.

Did you phone just to follow up?

Only phone SARS once the turnaround time on verification requests has lapsed. (21 business days).

If you don't:
  1. They will tell you that they (SARS) are still within turnaround time.
  2. You will achieve nothing other than clogging up the call center. The agents cannot do anything if SARS are still within turnaround time.
If you phone to request what documents they want, that is fine too. But don't ask them to hurry up if they are still within their turnaround time.

Please follow the escalation and complaints process once the 21 days have lapsed. I cannot stress this enough. Please do it right. There is a process to be followed and if it's not then we cannot get the Office of the Tax Ombud to assist taxpayers.

Here are the type of complaints that can be lodged:

Hi thanks a lot for this, I'll give it a go.
My verification has been completed, just waiting for the refund now which has been reversed

I forgot to mention that you will need to submit a selfie of yourself holding up your ID for the appointment.

I am upset now.
SARS have asked me for bond statements showing the interest on rentals, I have already sent the IT3B form, they have said it is not valid, they want 12 months statements showing interest for each property.....

I must also tell them why I made consecutive losses....well because the economy is stuffed and I havent increased rental to try keep tenants....

I must also get stamped statements showing I made payments

This is a joke
