SAT-3 problems cause Internet chaos

i guess this is where redundancy comes in(between cable systems) ;)

I just has a friend call me struggling to get his Windows Live (they still call it hotmail though don't they?) account to send out. Hasn't been able to send out since yesterday at around 16:00. Can't receive either.

Outlook gives some message about how the Live server doesn't support SSL, but when you try the webmail it appears to send just fine and then returns an error report about how it can't deliver the mail.

I don't know if that is connected to this SAT3 thing though considering he can access the Live webmail interface through a browser. It seems to have happened right around the time SAT3 was giving trouble for everyone though. Could this be something to do with this cable problem?

Hats off to the SAT3 guys at Telkom. What could have been a total blackout fall-over was in the end a less calamitous fall-back. Delays. Slow speed. But we didn't just get load-shedded.

South (or Southern can't remember off hand) Africa Far East cable system. The company I work for has got a slice of that for some call centres and other bits and bobles in India. Quite hard to get capacity on but way faster than going via SAT3 if you're trying to go to Asia.

I sorta know about SAT-1, 2 and 3 and SAFE... read the relevant post very carefully.

Absolute Taurus Faeces (for want of a more descriptive expletive): Telkom said: "In preparation for planned work by the Sat-3 consortium, customers were informed that there would be a 4 to 6 hour downtime today". Which customers, Telkom? Not even your TelkomInternet customers were informed, so who are you kidding? One of the main reasons I am leaving TelkomInternet at the end of January. Totally useless bunch of [expletives]!

Has anyone still got issues with international browsing? I can't do anything on port 80 on international but all other ports seem to be working... Just wondering if it could be my ISP or if it is related to the SAT-3 issues...

Yeah still having problems this side taking forever to load sites.

Happy Groundhog Day

2 Feb is Groundhog Day - is it just me or is the feeling of deja vu of SAT-3 snapping on Groundhog Day as funny as it is frustrating?

I've had k@k latency in wow for the past 2-3 days....my browsing's gone to hell as well, even here at work. Not even my msn wants to connect stably, off and on the whole morning.
