SAT3 Major Cable Break

WebAfrica also seems to be down at least on the verizon unshaped account. Checking the other ones now.

Eh, you don't get that anymore, they have all been merged into webafricas network. If you put .v or .s on the unshaped it doesn't make a difference

Connection seems to come and go. Network notice update:

The following notice has been UPDATED.

TIME: 21 Jan 2010 4:47:41 PM
ADDITIONAL: Telkom confirmed that the International outage is due to the
SAT3 maintenance that is currently taking place. The Estimated Time to Repair for the current outage is 19:00.

POINTS OF IMPACT:
Gallo Manor - Johannesburg
Great Westerford - Cape Town
International

Guys you got to realize that ADSL is not the only thing going though these lines

I am afraid its the thing they will sacrifice when they have a major outage like this

Corporates and so on will take preference over broadband users

So if you are paying like a R100000 per month for a 2 meg Diginet line to the internet or even to an international office you will take priority

A perfect example of this is my corporate network is unaffected by this outage and it also goes over SAT3

So until they fix this line issue broadband is not on there priority list

I feel sorry for small businesses which reply on broadband but that's how things are

I think you stand corrected.

AFAIK, WebAfrica transferred only their subscribers who were previously on the SAIX backhaul, so their clients who were on the Verizon backhaul remain unaffected by the new WebAfrica backhaul. (For the time being, I guess.)

However, that doesn't mean that the Verizon (aka MTN Business) backhaul is immune to cable breaks!

The following notice has been UPDATED.

TIME: 21 Jan 2010 5:22:49 PM
ADDITIONAL: The International outage has been cleared and all our affected links have been restored. Please note that the planned maintenance work will still continue as scheduled.

POINTS OF IMPACT:
Gallo Manor - Johannesburg
Great Westerford - Cape Town
International

OPENING TIME: 20 Jan 2010 5:29:27 PM
CAUSE OF PROBLEM: Telkom Maintenance
SYMPTOMS EXPERIENCED: High Latency
SEVERITY: Critical
STATUS: Attending
ATTENDING: Telkom Engineers
ADDITIONAL: Please note that Telkom SA is conducting major maintenance on the shunt fault on Segment 14 of SAT-3, about 627 km from the ACC Beach Manhole. This maintenance will run from the 20-22 January 2010 and resume again on the 29 January to 01 February 2010 within the maintenance window
(00:01 to 04:00 UCT). Due to this maintenance, there will be intermittent high latency to London UK and Paris for the duration of this maintenance.

yip...can log into wow again...with latencies of 11k - 15k :wtf:

I am told high latency is because SAT3 is on a restoration path. Anyone else hear anything like that

When will we know how it was damaged? did some idiot captain drop his anchor on it?

And sorry for the n00b question, But I gather redundancy is not the same as redundant in this case, could somebody please explain?

IS International Link Goes Down

Thu, 21 Jan 2010, 4:10 pm
by Stephen Whitford, Do Gaming editor
Tags: Telkom, IS, Internet Solutions

Internet Solutions (IS) is currently experiencing high latency on supplying international bandwidth to its customers or is unable to supply it at all.

Do Gaming was notified of the problem by gamers using smaller ISPs who on-sell IS bandwidth.

When Do Gaming called the IS call centre, a pre-recorded message stated there was a problem on the IS backbone on both the London and Rosebank and New York and Cape Town links.

Gamers who need international bandwidth urgently can top up their Telkom Do Broadband accounts via the Telkom SA website.

Cant believe that. They actually post this as a headline article on their website. They fail to mention SAIX based ISPs are also experiencing the same problems, and then to top it off they throw in an advertisement at the end of the article for Do broadband accounts. Then the editor of the website (who wrote the article) defends his actions in the comments section below the article.

What a joke.

I wouldn't be surprised if they take that article down.

Gotta love South African gaming journalism.
