Science Must Fall? - UCT Fallist discusses Decolonization

One of those intellectuals that clearly prefers to sit in the shadows and let others shine.

Edit: btw, who is the other lady her left?

Re: video clip from student-organised UCT Science Faculty Engagements gathering, that is currently circulating under the tagline ‘#sciencemustfall’:
The video was taken at a gathering aimed at fostering understanding and discussion within the science faculty regarding current campus events, and Shackville TRC – not decolonisation. The clip was part of a larger discussion where participants could voice concerns and opinions. A question was posed to one of the SRC candidates on decolonisation, which she answered with her opinion.
The YouTube channel was not created by UCT Science Faculty Engagements. When you encounter such material do also consider the motive behind sharing a decontextualized excerpt. Multiple opinions were given and only one is shown in the video excerpt. We encourage people to watch the full video.
If you have an opinion on the views expressed, or just want to hear what other people are thinking, then please come and join the discussion and engage on these important topics.

ok, so the actual video is 3 hours long, what is this, an attempt to get sane people to commit suicide?

Some nice discussions actually, still going through it, but it seems the one lady clearly has an issue with white anything tbh.

Lady? Isn't that a western lable to an upper class female drinking tea at Downton Abbey?

Just went through this with ENO's.
Sorry the same 'lady' making the remarks about the sciences, is the same privileged lady at a higher learning institution and sounds like she is not happy with the curriculum as such.

University never was a norm for everyone, you ARE privileged!

Get your degree and prosper!

All I know is that if I was paying for this I would pull the plug, honestly. This is not free thinking, it borders on indoctrination.

..and the 2017 Nobel Prize for physics goes to.....the (re) inventor of the wheel

The student leader was asked about decolonisation and her reply is there for the world to see. Does anything in the longer version of the video prove that what she says in the edited clip was taken out of context?

Those first two points with regards to decolonisation don't seem to have anything to do with decolonisation. They're taking subjects such as ethics, sociology, history, as well as the application of science and unnecessarily adding the word decolonisation to them.

An opinion piece that the morons of the #____mustfall groups should read and see if they can answer.

If these paintings were offensive to you because they reminded you of whites, why do you wear the clothing of the whites, speak the language of the whites, utilise the technology and medication of the whites, and pay good money to be educated like whites? If a mere painting is offensive to you, shouldn’t you wipe out every other vestige and symbol of white culture as well? Shouldn’t the males amongst you turn up at ‘varsity dressed in animal skins and feathers, and beshus to cover their backsides? And the female students’ short grass skirts or beaded cotton strings, with their breasts swinging free? C’mon guys, don’t be such cowards.

If you want to protest against white culture, do it properly. Throw your smartphones away and speak your own languages, be it Zulu, Xhosa or whatever.

Aren't most people of current University going age a product of Outcome Based Education? That was pretty much a throwing out of the "western way" and implementing a more "african way". If so, it explains why current students want to reject standard western learning practices.

Someone should point out to them that even the Department of Education admitted that Outcome Based Education was a failure.

Sadly OBE, an American invention, was first adopted in the US then the UK and South Africa, slowly spreading to the rest of the world, and is responsible for the shockingly high level of functionally illiterate school leavers in all places that have adopted it. Yet for some reason no-one suggests dropping it.

I have never seen so much pseudo-intellectualism in all my life. Maybe if these people actually studied while they where at college they could have become real intellects.

The comments on youtube are funny

I notice that this student's comments are clearly so inane that even the rabid anti-white voices that usually pipe up on this forum have remained silent.

Someone should ask her if she uses Western tampons. Why does she not decolonize tampons with an African versions of straw or animal skin.
