Science Must Fall? - UCT Fallist discusses Decolonization

Aren't most people of current University going age a product of Outcome Based Education? That was pretty much a throwing out of the "western way" and implementing a more "african way". If so, it explains why current students want to reject standard western learning practices.

Someone should point out to them that even the Department of Education admitted that Outcome Based Education was a failure.

OBE is a world wide phenomenon.

The only thing that supersedes her stupidity is her arrogance.

Why even bother with tests. Obviously they are a eurocentric mode of evaluation as well.

You kid, but that is exactly what some of the higher level 'academics' of the RMF/FMF/decolonization movement propose. In one of the other threads they quoted saying just that.

Lol. You guys should check out Twitter. Some of the #sciencemustfall memes are great!

This was posted on my friends fb page in response to this article.
I could not say it better myself.

This is but a small example of the "intellectual" giants to whom we are supposed to entrust our social, scientific, economic and cultural future. If the basic understanding by a person that had maths and science at school, that the Laws of Nature are universal, no matter if DESCRIBED" by a colonialist, Africanist or whatever bloody else'ist you are, then the future looks really bleak. It is clear the speaker in the video does not understand that true intellectuals like Newton, Einstein and the like did not invent gravity and relativity, but were the first in understanding in how to describe it how and why it functions. It is now up to the lady in the video to scientifically describe how magic can cause someone to be struck by targeted lighting. Good luck in that branch of Afrocentric Science. This is the final product you get from a government that has actively destroyed the natural ability to think logically that people are born with, by means of implementing a schooling system where the hive mentality and collective thinking that naturally can only progress at the pace of the slowest is actively enforced. This has the expected result of no-one in the collective, or the collective as a whole, accepting responsibility for themselves, and the consequence of their actions. In this case again, ...sigh, it is the fault of colonialism, and by extension the whites and Jannie van Riebeeck I suppose.

Yeah, but it is coming under increasing criticism. Australia, for one, has largely moved away from it in recent years since they found that while it sounds like a great idea it is hard to define the outcomes that are actually useful and in practice schools end up trying to pander to an unfocused mish mash of conflicting outcomes.

She should probably start an university on her own, then.
Anyway, it's called Newton's theory......it's called theory for a reason. If you find some better proof or formula, then you challenge the theory. You can't scrapp it just because you're an idiot who doesn't understand it.

Oh yeah. I was just pointing out that OBE in and of itself was not some government scheme to reject Western educational practices.

Shocked? Yeah I am. Concerned? Not so much. This is just a bunch of (I hate using this term) SJWs who are studying BA, who know nothing about science and who have no influence on the curriculum.

If these were BSc or Engineering students then I would be deeply concern because a 10th grade level of physics would be able to dispel all her arguments.

My concern was more about the way they bullied the guy with an opposing view.

My concern is that this "movement" has been afforded such a platform to date, the question is what traction will they gain with other initiatives because to oppose them would leave someone being branded racist or sexist or what ever'ist.

I asked on FB and will ask again here, if this girl ends up in hospital with a critical condition, is she going to stick to her guns and deny treatments that are based on western medical science?

I wonder how her day is going, must feel pretty bad to humiliate yourself on such a large scale and have thousands of people mocking your intellect on social media.

Or maybe she's so convinced in her point of view that it's water off a duck's back.

I am very interested as to how they imagine (maybe that's the key word) they are going to solve some very fundamental engineering issues without using one of the tenets of Newton's theories, the calculus...

The UCT Medical Faculty released a statement earlier this week that they wish to decolonise the medical training and pharmacy training curriculum. With 80% of South Africans utilising African Traditional Medicines (according to the W.H.O), there is a push to forego evidence-based medicines for locally grown herbs and psycho-spiritual standards of care. This will fundamentally change the way people are treated and experience medicine - they claim.

I think we will see a lot of medical practice equipment in Cash Crusaders soon, and the price of little leather bags with dry bones, cowrie shells and rusted bottle tops will increase proportionately.

This coupled with the dire state of our medical system reported on today by the SA Medical Association, means things are going to get a lot worse soon.
