Scooters.

Okay, so, I don't know anything about licenses for these things.

What's the process?

If you buy new the dealer will do everything for you. (at a price, I paid R600 which included licence/registration fees, number plate and some petrol in the tank) They wil fill in and let you sign the necessary form and make a copy of your ID document.

Oh yes, sorry, what I mean is getting your learners and whatnot.

You can't get insurance unless you have a learners permit, and I am in a bit of a hurry to get this done, so I have the horror of the traffic department ahead of me...

Just go to the licensing dept and get a learners. If you're in Joburg I have a guy that can get you the appointment quickly.

It is not a highway I am worried about, just a section of road that is dual and triple laned with a maximum speed limit of 80 - 100km/h, depending on the section. I don't know if you guys are familiar with Kliprivier Road in the south of Jo'burg?

I have a suzuki AN 125 scooter, I used to live in brackendowns and travel via kliprivier every day to turfontein, My scooter can reach around 100km/h but then my petrol consumption goes up quite a bit, mostly on that road I travel on the most left lane the whole way through to turfontein. i travel usually between 70 and 80, if the cars are not happy to sit behind me then they can gladly go around me in one of the faster lanes. never had an issue on that road.

Christ, this is a mission.

As far as I can gather, all those cheap ones are complete rubbish, and fall apart.

The quality ones are goddamned expensive, and to get one that's not going to have to be walked up hills seems a challenge.

I thought this would be simple, FFS. :D

I have had the galactica for about two years now, no major issues except the clutch going.

Most of the chinese/ japanese ones use a GY6 motor. I have done almost 5000km on mine and just didi regular services.

With the services once you have finished off the warrenty take it to someone private because its much cheaper.

Will do. I just use it to ride to work, (depending on how I feel each morning, it's either the Galaktika or the Avenger) only done about 45km in three weeks so problems might only appear after a couple years.

Ah, thanks a lot for the feedback. Cruising comfortably at 70/80 is perfect as I stick to 80 in my car anyway along Kliprivier (Metro have made a habit of hiding in the bushes all along that road).

It sounds like you're travelling by space ship to work every morning. :)

Impressive.

I used to drive one. Was a lot of fun. Many happy memories touring around Cape Town on one. Very few things are better than a fuel bill of less than R100 a month :D

Copa, another big consideration is how much you weigh... if you're heavy then I really recommend a 200cc - 250cc scooter minimum, or just a proper bike like the Honda CBX 250. That will set you back R35,000 though...

I weigh 85, and hope to get down to 80 soon. :D

The whole point of this exercise is cheap, cheap, cheap, so...

After a lot of phoning around, these are the options available in my area, aside from the various Chinese cheapies:

*Sym Symphony and Fiddle 125.
*Suzuki AN125
*PGO XHOT
