Screamer ADSL

Still Unstable

Hi All

My usual update of progress on the Screamer Front...

After the "Upgrades"

20th December was Screamers 1st Day of 40kbps... and it lasted for about a day or so......

22nd December was back to 5kbps then back to 20kbps.... This continues for the last few days.....

Yesterday it was down..... Eventually phoned to ask when it would be back......

Torrents are definetly still "Semi-Shaped" aka u never know what speed Screamer will give you......

So dont sign up yet....

I am thinking if you were on the Screamer 1mb Uncapped line what speed would you get????

Will keep you posted....

PS. If this thread is quiet its cause people are tired of saying the same thing... Not cause the problems are sorted....

bah, that sucks.

Thanks for the update, seems non of the uncapped offerings are worth signing up for just yet.

Been looking at this thread and considering taking a month long trial of screamer. I currently have three different ADSL packages for business and family use - time to rationalise for 2010.

I'd be interested to know if the guys here reckon screamer is ready for serious use - early feedback was terrible, but it seems to be getting better. If I take it for a month and it fails to impress I won't come back - so I want to time it right. Will probably take the plunge for a 1MB package in January and then drop some of my other stuff if it works well.

I use mainly http for business from home (heavy use - some automated software that really works my ADSL line), but some torrents etc would be nice for personal use.

Howzit - how quickly could I get a 1MB - I see you were turning people away for a while? Also - will you guys really have all your changes done (proper IP addresses etc) as promised by end Dec?

Anyone else - better solutions - I want proper uncapped, not the half baked IS express stuff.

Thanks!

We have now provisioned our ADSL packages with additional bandwidth to make sure that all our clients get full speeds. That means that we are now activating the queued applications and should have caught up in a day or 2 so any new applications will probably get activated in 3 to 4 days.

Thanks. Is that here on MBB or on the digichilli website forum? I'll look around.

Thing is for 1MB line on DG you are looking at R3000pm. Am I missing something... What do you get for doubling the price. Guaranteed speed? Doesn't sound like they are doing that great on that promise.

Our 512 and 1Mg lines are the most popular so I assume that is because of the pricing.

can anyone who has accounts do speedtests and let us know how torrents/skype/etc is preforming on screamer please please.

also if you are getting a external IP address so we can see if you are behind a NAT, etc?

Danx:p

We are still Nat'ing the connection so if you want to use the connection for a special application that requires an external IP I suggest you wait untill we publish the fact that we are supplying external IP's.

Another question for Howzit.

I saw the term semi-shaped used on the website. I know what shaping is - but the first time I've seen this - the SA broadband market seems to make up new terms every week.

Googled it - got two definitions:

1- Semi-Shaped = Services are shaped during office hours and not shaped during the nights and on weekends.
2- Semi-Shaped = P2P is shaped but other things like gaming are not penalised as per normal shaping.

Which is screamer using. Perhaps Howzit can define it fully - ie - the hours if definition 1 or the protocols if definition 2.

Apologies for my ignorance.

We were allocating the torrents to bandwidth set aside just for torrents so that they did not affect other clients uses but because we have so much bandwidth now allocated to our ADSL clients this is no longer necessary so I imagine this is how we were "semi-shaping" our bandwidth. Again, this selective prioritisation is no longer being done

Your erratic connection does not sound like it is as a result of the bandwidth we are providing but please PM me your account no and I will ask our tech team to monitor your connection.

By the way I have still to find an unhappy client who does not vocalise his/her unhappiness. A quiet thread is normally a happy thread :p

Hi guys sorry for barging in like this. I have 2 very important questions to ask:

1 - Has anyone tried using Screamer for Xbox LIVE? If so, do you experience a lot of lag? Alternatively please post ping times to a) www.mybroadband.co.za and b) www.bbc.co.uk

2 - Are you now accepting new customers? :)

Thanks for reading.

howzit,

This external IP issue, does it effect Skype, iTunes, Remote Desktop etc?

Has anyone tried Skype videoconferencing to the UK with Screamer? What were the results like?

1 - We have many clients using our ADSL connection for gaming and they seem happy with it but I will wait to see if one of them can tear themselves away from their games to do a speed test for you. I am seeing average pings to Europe of between 200ms to 300ms.

2 - We are currently activating new customers

Not supplying external IP's will not affect any of your proposed uses at all.

Number 2 might not be correct according to the help desk.

Uhm, Howzit, can you explain to me how I will be able to remote desktop home when having a NAT'ed internal IP address assigned to my router that is not publicly available??
How will I reach my router if I'm coming from external??

Skype and Itunes works a charm, as it doesn't require NAT'ing to be done. I Skype often with friends in UK with webcam, weekends sometimes it is not that good for obvious reasons.

ps. I have a 384Kbps line.

aekritzinger,

Thanks for the feedback. Sounds great to me.

Remote Desktop for me will be remoting out, not in. So I hopefully wont have a problem

Long, you will not get it this year. I just got off the phone with screamer and seems they actually stopped activating accounts and placed everyone in some waiting list!! (without of course telling me)

When i asked "when", only answer "somewhere in january" .

Guess no internet over new years, *continues searching*.

*sigh*

So it's a no-go for DigiChilli AND Screamer.

I was told "early in January", by week 1 or week 2. Guess we will have to wait and see ... meanwhile I still have some prepaid WA cap lying around unused so I can use that for a short while. Just hope it's the first week.

Only cheap ISP offering a static IP as well. I would really enjoy having one of those, as it simplifies VPN setups quite a bit. Just curious how they managed to do that, from my understanding of it, Telkom's ESR's assign from a dynamic pool. IS do static IP's by connecting you to their MPLS backbone, but you need a router configured specifically for this, and capabale of managing that. So far no mention of any special routers on their information brochure.

Screaming along at 8kbps

Hi All...

Still screaming along at 8kbps....

The average today has been 15kbps....

When u phone technical they cant explain why it slow....

PS. I have PM'ed my account details a few times thus far...

If u upgrade to 512 or 1mb do u get better speeds or are u throwing good money at bad???

What to do What to Do???

Got my account today.

Torrents flying... well compared to DigiChilli who have never ending issues.

Sticking with Screamer for now.

Guys

We have absolutely not stopped accepting new applications. I know because I was informed that we still have some capacity for new applications today.

Your activation currently will take no longer that 2 days. If you have not received your login in 2 days please PM me and I will follow up.

PM'ed you. I phoned your SALES department and that is what i was told when i asked what the status of my app is : that they stopped PROCESSING apps and only started to process again yesterday [30th] and therefore there are some sort of waiting list now. All rather unacceptable to only find out -after- you signed up.

So somewhere Technical and Sales are not talking to each other.
