Screamer ADSL

And thanks to howzit, I am finally online! Seems the username in my original email was incorrect.

First impressions: SL runs very well. Multithreaded downloads are at a respectable rate. This seems to be a good service speed-wise.

Hopefully they fix their public IP's quickly, then it would be a great service for me.

On that note, what exactly is the drawback of not having a unique ip?

So far, skype (video conferencing) ,steam, xfire and my mmo gaming works fine (Fallen Earth at this stage = USA server and all). Unless you host something from your own pc,is it really required?

Even with a dynamic IP it's tricky to host anything, alwyas have to map your latest IP to something. I mostly use services like LogMeIn/Mesh to get to my PC from the outside, which basically creates a virtual network [VPN if you like] via the specific service.

I don't really dabble alot with torrents, so can't comment what the impact is on that though.

Here's a quick off-the-top-of-my-head list, given a few hours I am sure I can come up with more.

  • I establish IPSec VPN's between my home and work networks
  • I run my own mailserver
  • I log into my network from external locations via SSH
  • Torrent peers throttle you back if you don't upload back to them
  • Yahoo Webcam likes to create a tunnel into your network for better performance
  • Skype can give better performance (reportedly) if it can access your PC directly instead of having been proxied
  • IRC XDCC needs a port forwarded
  • Several gaming products can run a local server, but needs to access the machine running it. Useful if you want to run a private game over the internet

Once ran into an OL game that forbids multiple connections from the same IP, using it as a way to determine whether you have multiple accounts (against the ToS). And they banned immediately for it, affecting quite a few of my friends on MTN and Vodacom. Was a VERY long and drawn-out procedure to convince them otherwise.

Some idiot websites ban based on IP (yeah, I know). So potentially, one person misusing the service can block the whole ISP from that site. I saw that a few times with Google. People do nasty things, they block one of the SAIX proxies for a short time, I get an error when searching. Irritated me quite a lot.

Is anyone else having problems with slow download speeds and unstable connections?
Also when more than one pc tries to connect to the internet it starts running slow.
I have a 4mb line but my internet is running as if it was a 512 line and sometimes a 1mb line.

I will be using this for torrents only on a 384kb package,is it worth it?,looking to do atleast 60gb-70gb a month.

As it stands it is not worth it, no public IP's which limits torrents... Give them some weeks and they will have the IP's and it should be good for torrents.

Besides the obvious limitations for any application that needs to accept incoming connections there are other issues to consider:

As soon as thousands of users are sharing the same IP there is a much higher chance that the IP gets blacklisted. And once the IP is blacklisted this will affect far more users.

There are also operational/technical issues. Carrier grade NAT is actually more complicated to run successfully and more prone to failure than a standard routed network. There are also limitations to the number of connections that can be opened through a single CGN and when you have users with connection intensive apps (eg P2P apps) you can quickly end up with a dead network.

I'm on the 512 uncapped and in the last 4 days, just on torrents, I have downloaded 5.2gig and upped 2.3gig (yeah, I reinstalled Utorrent and forgot to limit the up speeds)... so in all I have moved 7.5gig in 3.5 days... not bad. That was for 5 torrents at the same time... I will say tho that they dont run full speed if done individually. And also that my browsing speed seem to be quite slow too (with no torrents running).

I'm happy with Screamer at this stage - December was a great month for downloading.

They'll have me as a customer as long as the speeds stay up there!

I applied for a 30gb package last night and am currently waiting for activation, I used WA unshaped for a few years and was quite happy but their failure to evolve has lead me to look for greener pastures , however after reading this thread and all the issues people are having im sorta thinking the grass is only greener here coz theres more crap on it!?. I will wait and see if they activate me withing two days and i will test the connection for a month, if i have to struggle with any little issue i will find something better.

I have used the Axxess uncapped and am going to give the 10gb account a test then will re-evaluate who is best for uncapped.

having a problem visiting international websites. taking very long to load. is anyone else experiencing the same problem?

Same problem here. Seems very sluggish.(Nothing else running)
