Screamer WiMax

HI howzit,

We have send a mail regarding the speed upgrade, so once that is done, I will post another speed test.

I see why we can't host games. The ports are block. This is strange, cause with Telkom, none of the ports were blocked and I assumed it's because we don't use routers...

Should we log a call with the helpdesk to open these ports?

 1mb uncapped. You are very RICH. :D

This with screamer? and how did you get that low latency?

Not rich, I just like getting what I pay for. I don't know about the latency, ask Screamer....

Note taken and will be distributed to AA the help desks tomorrow.

I will see what can be done about your upload speed.

This solution was suggestion by a help desk agent by the name of Wanda (or similar). My suggestion would be to put common Wimax problems and solutions on your website, in addition to ensuring the help desk personnel are clued up, as I personally prefer self-help as far as possible

Howzit - please give us some detail about this 'connection optimisation'. What aspects are looked at and what settings changed?

FYI:

Screamer network was down today in Midrand(macprop tower) from 7pm till 9pm because of power trip.

As per your request on another thread our guys are compiling an FAQ section. Unfortunately latency is not always the same from one client to another as it depends on the transmission pipe to the tower, no of clients operational at that time on the tower, distance and clutter, etc.

I get about 50ms from Bryanston to the edge of the Screamer network. Then there is the added leg from Screamer to the SpeedTest server. 19ms is insanely quick ^^

Will post my SpeedTest when I get home.

Hi Sharkbait

We do not block ports to stop gamers.
Do you want to host a game server?
Please send me a PM or and e-mail to [email protected] and let me know what you want to do and I will check your settings.

Yeah, In warcraft3 on bnet you gan host a game and all the other people on bnet can join your game. They can't join my game which normally indicates that your firewall is on or port forwarding hasn't been done on the router. Obviously we don't have routers and I have check and my firewall is off. Please note that they can see my game, but are unable to join it, which is further proof of ports being block.

Edit:

Speed test 1mbps:

Upload speeds still suffering. :D

Edit2:

Could someone else(screamer user) maybe test this as well?

Your ports aren't being blocked.
You don't have a Public IP.

Screamer is NATing you out to the internet.

Hi Sharkbait

All of Screamers clients sit behind a Nat firewall. If you want to host games then you need to apply for a public IP. You can contact Bianca with this.

after many mails and a site test i have concluded that the coverage map is wrong hehe.

It told me i had coverage ... nice fat green coverage , and i was so excited ... seeing as we have no telkom in the area ... thus no adsl ... we have no neotel , thus none of the capless joy ... so i thought screamer had come to save me ...

they didnt.

/cry

the site check guy was very helpfull and tried his arse of to get signal , but it was not meant to be ... the only useable signal was smack bang in the middle of my tile roof , and i wasnt about to drill a hole into a non-leaking roof ...

Hi there Newb-lite

I am surprised that there was only signal in the middle of your roof and not even a side mounted pole could have been used.

Could you please PM me the area that you are in or the technicians name or description that visited you so I can follow up.

Thanks

Still going strong here ... Screamer WiMax is working out so well for me that I really doubt I would switch to ADSL when/if Telkom get more lines in the area.

(Telkom's infrastructure project in my area was originally due to complete in January and has been push back to June)

As requested here is a speed test on my 1Mg uncapped line

http://www.speedtest.net/result/442456589.png

I ran a speedtest again and noticed that the ISP reported by speedtest.net has changed. It used to say Telkom SA, as does Playoff's results, but now it says SMMT Online. Not 100% sure since I only ran the speedtest twice (maybe 3 weeks) apart but it seems that will the DL speed has increased slightly my latency has improved significantly - from approx. 120ms to 50ms.

Howzit - did you guys make changes to your backhaul setup? And could this have impacted the connection quality or am I just reading something from nothing...

We have 4 different riute sources of bandwidth to ensure redundancy and performance equalisation. As you probably heard at the beginning of this year SAIX had some technical issues which degraded all the ISP'S services who relied soley on them but our services continued to perform because of the supply alternatives.
2 are fibre, one is miocrowave and one is satellite. Our engineers monitor demand on our various routes and backbone and constantly make adjustments to the supply on those routes.
