Someone from the UK yesterday gave me their sdhc card from their camcorder (canon I think) after they deleted (not a format) their wedding stuff.

I've moved the cards write tab to the locked position and made an image with dd.

Never done an sd card, is there and easy way to get the files back. Not even sure what format the files on it would be. Will photorec/testdisk work?

Looks like Recuva is doing it's job. Thanks fsck it was only a delete they did...

I hate that! If I want to and do delete something I want it to be gone! Not moved to another space on the disk.

Ah well such is life. Get Linux.

IIRC correctly it doesn't get moved to another space on the disk, it just gets removed from the drive "index"

Still takes up space when you think it doesn't! :-)

No it doesn't. The index entry is removed and anything can write to that space. Whether that space has 'data' on it or all zeros the OS sees it as free space. If you do a defrag for example a lot of that space will be overwritten.

In linux gui stuff you delete moves to the trash folder unless you hold down the shift key. Using 'rm' from command line deletes stuff although it does not zero the space previously used on the disk. For new users 'rm' can be dangerous and I recommend using a alias 'mv' so stuff gets moved to the trash folder instead of being deleted.

I recovered all the videos to hard disk. Now I want to try and restore the files I recovered back to the camcorder sdhc card so they can play them back from the camcorder.

Folder: PRIVATE->AVCHD->BDMW
I have recovered all the avchd in the STREAM folder.
I have recovered all of the the cpi files in the CLIPINF folder and they mach the numbers of the avchd files.
I have recovered one _0000.MPL file in the PLAYLIST folder.

Folder: PRIVATE->AVCHD->CANON
Recovered files _0000.MPL to _0000_7.MPL

Folder: PRIVATE->AVCHD->CANONTHM
Recovered 5x JPG files

Folder: PRIVATE: CVINFO
Recovered _PLATTR.BAK to _PLATTR_10.BAK
Recovered _SHINFO.BAK to _SHINFO_5.BAK

Now I tried copying all the above (in correct folder) to the sdhc card but the camera says there are no clips to view.

I noticed online (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:AVCHD_actual_file_structure.jpg) that the avchd file structure has INDEX.BDM & MOVIEOBJ.BDM files but I found none on the sdhc card. Not sure if this is implemented with Canon.

Which files are essential for the restoration of the images to the sdhc card and which can I ignore. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.
