SEACOM cable progress report

Only thing that annoys me more then the seacom being down is the consumers of different ISPs blaming the ISP for the downtime. How exactly can minor Isps such as afrihost prevent this kind of thing?

I never blame the ISP and it also annoys me when people do blame the ISP. If they knew one iota more than I do about running a "traceroute" [tracert www.host.ext] they may educate themselves that the fault lay way beyond their ISP's control. I am also on Afrihost and they are EXCELLENT - repeat, EXCELLENT - especially when compared with other more expensive ISPs around! This splurb by SEACOM is nothing but hot air. I wish the quality of their cables was as perfect as their rhetoric.

I think the ISP's are somewhat responsible - Depending on what cable system they choose to use to serve their customers.
For instance Web Africa use SAT3/SAFE I never have a problem with them - but my other accounts that use other cable systems have problems at times.
Its like buying a PC from a PC shop and the stock arrives late - who are you going to blame the Distributer or the PC shop?
Its the ISPs choice on what cable/cables to use so it's their fault - they should make provision if their back haul goes down not us.
Its called redundancy.

so if they steal the copper on your road, your ISP is also suppose to have a backup set. When your ISP falls down do you as a consumer have a redundant ISP to back you up????????

It is easy to blame some one else, but reality is that the consumer makes a bad decision and now holds the seller responsible, because in today's world the customer is always right. I believe that the customer is always wrong, because if they knew everything, they wouldn't need me, because they could do it themselves, rrrrrriiigghhhht?

Agreed, if all networks ran all of the time many people on this forum will be out of their job. Network downtime on cheap ADSL packages is a reality - live with it.

Also please note the lack of comments on this topic. Nobody really cares. 80% present of ADSL users probably didn't even notice the downtime.
The 20 % who did (or who cared) should be on more expensive packages with redundancies. These tend to be the guys that use ADSL for online business purposes who shouldn't be on the cheap packages anyway.

If you are on the least expensive Mweb uncapped package you should not be complaining about downtime!

I agree about the cheapest packages not expecting redundancy, but MWeb moved all consumer users (including capped ones) onto SEACOM, which now seems a bit premature...

How is copper being stolen got to do with SEACOM going down - the place to complain about that would be Telkom because they own the local loop?
I was talking about... it's the ISP's choice on what international cable and back haul to use - why must a consumer buy 2 or 3 different ISP accounts encase a cable breaks, its the ISP's responsibility to provide sufficient redundancy.

I agree the customer isn't "ALWAYS" right.
Why do it yourself if you can get someone to do it for you? And if you cannot do it I'll find someone else who can :P

ISP's do offer services which include redundant circuits. They are called business services. They are not as susceptible to a cable problem. They are a lot more expensive than consumer services. They are more expensive because they include multiple routes. You have the choice to to use them. If you are so reliant on a service then you should be using them.
