Hi All,

(Apologies for the cross post, I posted this in another thread, but I figured it good to post it here where people would more easily see it, so people know whats going on)

We have had confirmation that SEACOM is currently offline and will be for a good few days, due to a failure in the TE-NORTH cable (by their emails, read, undersea fault). According to their communications it will take approximately a week to repair once permits are granted, which are expected to take 5 days. I.E SEACOM will be offline for possibly 10 days or more.

From the TENET perspective, we have DR bandwidth which so far is handling fine, though I suspect there will be many ISP's suffering rather badly during this period.

Thanks

Andrew

Thanks for the heads up, Andrew. Luckily I have my Telkom account currently active... was about to change it to my uncapped account - not any more! :o

My account on the Neology network seem to be running normally. Redundancy ftw.

Ok. So if this is the case, why is my international internet still working ???

Most ISP's have some level of redundancy, though normally its not 100% of the primary capacity. I.E you will still have international bandwidth, it will just be at a degraded speed dependent on your ISP's level of redundancy. Typically commercial ISP's will start heavily throttling torrents, peer to peer traffic and other such things during outages like this. Also keep in mind, its still weekend, so there is more capacity available on most ISP's during the weekends because they aren't carrying the normal business load either.

I expect we will see some fairly heavy saturation in the coming 2 weeks, but things will still *function*

Since Seacom is poked, does that mean mweb (even after business hours) blocks the ports and connectivity to steam? i had no issues up until midday yesterday, and now i can't even authenticate with steam or EA servers, anyone have some info on this?

11 OCTOBER 2011

SEACOM experienced a service affecting outage in the Mediterranean on Saturday, 8th October between Abu Talat (Egypt) and Marseilles (France).

The estimated time of repair is expected to take approximately two weeks. The repair vessel has been notified of the callout and mobilization will occur once the necessary permits are received.

SEACOM has now added substantial restoration capacity to the network and by late afternoon Tuesday will have restored approximately 85% of its customers’ required services on alternate routes. SEACOM continues to monitor the situation closely and will provide customer updates regularly.

Even after biz hours Steam is slow for me and I am on an unshaped line.
