It might make the wholesale side of things cheaper. So ADSL ISPs would hopefully be able to buy bandwidth on the cable from IS and Neotel for cheaper. So the ludicrous R70 a gig would come down.

Don't forget Vodacom, MTN, Iburst, Neotel and Sentech who would hopefully be able to get cheaper bandwidth. There are alternatives to ADSL that will hopefully force Telkom to drop their rates ;)
 
We waited so long, patience have its virtues to some extend, I just hope its is here before we become patients.

According the SEACOM, the price already includes Neotel's backhaul to Jo'burg, where most international bandwidth is hubbed anyway:

It should be noted that this is a full bandwidth solution from a local point of presence, typically to Johannesburg, to an international destination like London. There is hence no additional local bandwidth cost over and above the international rates.

And I speak under correction here, but if Neotel (eventually :rolleyes:) gets to flooding the market with their CDMA offerings, it should hopefully not be too much of a mission to move customers over or to enhance the tools in your home and the network around us all to a wireless offering which would rival or at least compare favourably with ADSL.

Oh and thanks to Seacom for not beating around any bushes.

ok, now im confused as to how this whole pricing thing works, please could someone explain what the Price per mbps per month for a STM-1 (155 Mbps) service is R 673-00, what does this mean?

That is the price that ISPs pay for every megabit of bandwidth transferred (per month). That is not for us consumers... but it does mean that the savings will be passed down to us. So take all the customers that WebAfrica has together. When all of us together have pulled down one Megabit in a month, then WebAfrica has to pay SeaCom those amounts quoted.... aerying per speed. They charge us the breakdown of that figure plus their markup. Does that make sense? You don't pay that... you only pay a portion of that (for whatever bandwidth you have used), plus mark-up.

So what gary is trying to say is prices will decrease by 10 rand a meg and all the isp's will be making a killing.

How do these prices compare to the SAT cable pricing? Where can I find SAT cable wholesale pricing?

I know it says between R3500 - R11000 per Mbps, but this is very vague.

Just to clarify... this is the SeaCom pricing breakdown... better laid out....

STM64 = 9.6 Gbps = R267 per Mbps per month
STM16 = 2.5 Gbps = R435 per Mbps per month
STM4 = 600 Mbps = R575 per Mbps per month
STM1 = 155 Mbps = R673 per Mbps per month

in other words the more data the ISPs buy, the cheaper it is.

I will find the SAT3 prices for you... they are around here somewhere.
 
doesnt it work on a pipe size rather than data size? I believe the STM1 = 155 Mbps = R673 per Mbps per month equals a pipe that can handle 155Mbps. So it doesnt realy matter how much bandwidth you use.
