SEACOM seems to be down again....

Local is also going very slow for some reason. I'm maxing at ~400kbit/s. I wonder if it is on TENETs side as well.

Definitely having an issue since about 2 hours ago. Our school gets connection via TENET, and international seems dead. Local websites also behaving oddly. I hate these kinds of unexplainable interruptions.

I haven't seen any failures on Seacom. I believe that particular failure is due to multiple circuit faults on the SANReN network.

Weirdly enough, about 2 minutes after my last post, everything suddenly came right again. Pity there no status board where a person can check up on these things. Would make informaing the staff in our school much easier.

Hi All,

Just a note:

SEACOM was not actually down, we experienced a simultaneous failure of both Telkom circuits out of Durban (The circuit to P.E and the circuit to Pretoria). The network is built with redundancy in mind, and the national network is a fully redundant ring (as is our connectivity to the SEACOM landing station), but unfortunately, no matter how much redundancy you put in place, there is a very limited amount you can do to protect from multiple simultaneous failures of this nature.

Thanks

Andrew

Thanks, Andrew. This is what I have been trying to convey as well; the Seacom cable itself is very stable.

Why is it that when one person's service goes down and onther for the same area has the same problem they shout wolf and everyone just goes SEACOM is down or one of the undersea cables must be down. PEOPLE DON'T YOU THINK THAT IF SOMETHING LIKE THIS HAPPENS THE FIRST PORT OF CALL IS YOUR ISP. They will know if there is a problem and what the cause is. Don't come here and spread unconfirmed information.

LOL @ AcidT
Could someone bring this guy some clean pants?
Anyway, yes, seacom had some issues, mweb said so last week, and why is this even surprising?

It's always funny when something breaks the failover never works....wtf?
This excuse is getting old...i work in IT and know about failover....it's because the buggers never test it...
Why? they only have one PRD system....so to test it they have to break it! and this is a risk they are not likely to take.

check computicket this morning and fifa a few days back...
you know you are going to get shi.te loads of traffic...but no...rather stay on your 10MB link and post a message that the site is down.
failover never works!!!!
never!!!!

Oh... so Mweb says something and it must be true...
According to the 4 Seacom customers that I am directly in contact with there have not been any failures on the Seacom cable itself since the maintenance window two weeks ago.

I can't recall the Seacom cable ever having any failures, did I miss it? Sure it was off-line once last month due to repairs being done on an upstream providers cable, and there are sometimes issues with providers and routes on either side of the cable, but the cable itself has never been down?

Pants is clean dude. I just over reacted a bit. It just angers me when one person will experience a problem and assumes the worst. This can almost be seen as Thread spamming. But anyway lets just go ahead and see where this goes. It seems like you are just farting against thunder anyway. As long as the company/s that owns a specific piece of technology or cable gets their pockets filled at the end of the month they do not give a rats ass about the consumer.
