I bought a second hand hard-drive from a guy in Bloem, I am in Jhb - he told me nothing was wronh with it so I bought it and it was running for about +/- 2 to 3 hours then it made a beeping sound and my Vista gave me a BSOD (1st time ever on Vista) - it seems the drive is dead now.

Do you guys/gals have any idea how I can save it, or maybe just get the data of it? Was busy copying my data to it when it crashed (cut and paste)

When my pc starts the hdd is only making a clicking sound for about 30 seconds and then nothing - my bios report it as a hard-drive failure

It's a 500 gig 32mb Seagate SATA2 hdd

Thanks

Aiiiiiiiii
When a drive dies, just send it to Storgate and have it swopped out.
Trying to save stuff is like pissing in the ocean :(
Trust me, I know!

Wait for it to cool to room temperature, wrap it in a plastic bag (seal it if you have one of those sealer gadgets) and stick it in the freezer for 10 min or. Then put it back in your PC and get your stuff off as quickly as possible.

And don't buy 2nd hand hard drives, unless you're buying from someone you can trust.

It's almost always to get your data off your drive, but the question is, is your data worth paying R5000-R10000 for? Recovery specialists don't charge you if they can't help you, but they most often can retrieve (most of or all) your data

If you get the drive to spin up, then i recommend r-studio. It saved me a few times.

Make sure it isn't just a problem with the cable not making sufficient contact. I've had lots of SATA data cable connection problems, causing clicking sounds :)

Thanks for the advice.

Tried all the tpis and advice seemed like my hdd and the data on it went to a better place :)

Another life lesson learned: Never to buy a 2nd hand hard drive again.

quick update:

The guy who sold me the drive said I must post it back to him and he will replace it for me - he said he already sorted it out with his supplier, the drive is still under warranty - Seems that thier is still "good guys" out there...

Wow! He deserves some word of mouth advertising.

Seagate hard drives all have a 5 year warranty, by the way.

It also depends on the owner-- you have to be the original owner. This is also applicable in "limited lifetime warranty" cases.

It also depends on if it was originally sold as part of an OEM system. I bought a HP system including a 160GB seagate drive which went dead about a month ago and was about 3 years old. On phoning Seagate I was told it was an oem drive and therefore no longer under warranty. I assume the current Iomega sold by IC with a 1 year warranty which contain Seagate drives would also not have this 5 year warranty.

Storegate was taken over by "Ingram Micro", their number in JHB is 011 553 2600. They are the best place to start.

I also had a "out-of-box" failure on one of those Seagate 500gb SATA2 32mb drives.
Bought 2, and the one did'nt work. So send it back to the supplier for a swapout.

Might be that seagate has a faulty batch here.

Geez, we're going to have to start using battery packs on all SATA/IDE controllers soon with that much cache.

I remember some years ago, drives from one brand (WD, IIRC) had an unusually high failure rate. After some investigation, it turns out the guys offloading the crate when it came into the country, dropped the whole crate several metres.

Another Quick Update:

The guy I bought the hard drive from managed to get it replace and he has send me a brand new sealed Seagate 500 Gig SATA hdd - seems he had to put-up a fight with his supplier but he manage to swop it out for a new one.

Rep Deserving:
The guys alias name is Slenderboy and I can recommend buying from him.
