This is computer stuff... it depreciates before you even open the box But seriously - i agree that the trade in price that Vodacom is offering is ludacris.

A more glaring way to illustrate :
If you buy a notebook now for R15k without a PCI-E slot. What's the odds that you will "trade" it in for R3k in less than year for one with a PCI-E slot. No way in hell i say.

What is Vodacom doing with the cards they buy from us suckers? Do they resell them? (and for how much?). I'll sell my card for whatever Vodacom SELL the 2nd cards.

Vodacom is not required to offer a trade in. Those that want to get rid of their old cards are entitled to sell them to whoever is willing to pay their price.

True, but it created the impression that the 'going rate' should be in the R400-R600 range [as seen in this thread] when imho it should be at least twice that.

Thats why i'm willing to offer ppl more for their modems. While i'd really like to get hold of one for R450 - i actually willing to pay a lot more. Just can't quite afford the current new price and i'd be willing to pay a more market related rate to someone who is planning to move up to HSDPA.
Hi..I can do you a brand new Vodafone 3G card[ sealed box] which is unlocked..I currently use mine with MTN.. price R1200 plus R35 postage.
Call me on 0837774225.

Say you sign a contract today to get the latest and greatest phone, the N70 or a lekker 2G phone.

Two months later 3G is launched or a much better phone (N80) comes out.

Why does everyone accept that they cannot get the new phone for free or try and hand their old phone in for a refund?

Because that is how it works.

So why when a new datacard becomes available, everyone suddenly demands an upgrade?

There is no difference between a handset and a datacard. It's a bit of (expensive) kit that gets subsidised by the network.

The fact that Vodacom extended the early upgrade program to less than 16 months (the norm for handsets) or are giving FREE swap-outs for contracts after 1st of Feb, seem to confuse everyone.

IMO it's bcos people tend to rush into contracts [yep - I believe people are like lemmings to the edge of a cliff] - instead of blaming themselves for not doing proper research & finding out that HSDPA is 'imminent' [:p :D] people rush into a contract as if the universe will crash & reboot if they don't sign on the dotted line...ergo the guilt being acted out when they discover how foolish they were & demanding an upgrade bcos they didn't do their research.

Honestly I don't mean to offend any forumites that ended up in that situation, and I know that you will think twice next time [lesson learnt & all - even though Vodacom has bailed many a new subscriber out with free HSDPA swapout], my point is that this forum and vodacom.co.za etc are sources of information which require careful study before rushing into anything :). I have several friends that I would love to donner for impulsive contract upgrades - instead of spending a couple of hours over a weekend looking at what best suites their needs...

We consumers need to enlighten ourselves - rise above being the mindless|gormless beasts that we are, only then will SA markets start to give consumers what they really want & need.

In defense of some forumites, not everyone can afford to outright purchase an expensive piece of kit, so the subsidised handsets or data cards can seem very attractive.

And we really don't need to hear about you private spanking sessions :D :D

Fixed that as best I could :).

PS: I wasn't saying buy outright instead of going for a contract - I'm just saying look at all the options, do the research - know what features you need & want & then find a handset & contract to match, instead too many people walk into a shop and allow the people behind the counter to decide for them...

Second hand 3G datacard for sale

I have a Novatel U630 datacard for sale. Any reasonable ( unrelated to Vodacom trade-in) offers considered.

vodacom vs MTN - Edge

I have a simple comparson on the edge technology between Vodacom and MTN.

I have two contracts, one with Vodacom, one with MTN.
Utilising the Nokia 9300i, and cable connected to my notebook, i get far faster speeds on MTN than on Vodacom.

In Mthatha the following speeds were achieved.

vod 72 18

mtn 320 68

and in East London:

vod 98 24

mtn 165 39

These were averages of a few tests, and I checked continuosly to make certain that the phone was connected via Edge and not GPRS.

I am certainly amazed that MTN is almost 4* faster than Vodacom in Mthatha, and twice as fast in East London.

Maybe v3g can comment.

very interesting that...
i've always suspected mtn GPRS/EDGE to be better than voda...

my guess though is that speeds fluctuate a lot. it'd be interesting to see some more stats from those areas in a few weeks time.

i got a question: if there are less people using mtn for GPRS/EDGE/whatever at a given time, will it be faster? because i know that there are thousands of people who have the option of using mobile internet but don't use it. like what if every single person with a phone capable of GPRS tried downloading stuff.

damn, looks like the wrong thread for this

Still no one want to give up their 3G cards????

And now with the HSDPA swap-out there must be heaps of them lying around at all the Vodashops.... v3g where could we get hold of them?

V3G,

any news on how we can get hold of old 3G cards? Could really use a couple of those cards in my world, the reduced cost of a 3G contract far outweighs the increased speed of HSDPA.

Do you still have no answer or have you forgotten to revert...
