I'm looking for a decent 2nd hand Macbook for the wife. Nothing fancy, browsing, and the odd app. Also a laptop that actually has a battery capable of sustaining the laptop for more than 6.3minutes. I saw a few on Gumtree, but I am not sure how much you can trust anyone/thing on there?

Are there any other spots I can have a look at to get one?

If you buy a secondhand one just buy a new battery regardless.

Gumtree, bidorbuy, junkmail, carbonite classifieds are where I usually look.

I got my first Macbook off gumtree for a good price, but be aware of scammers!!!

In fact I saw a Macbook pro on there for R3000, without a doubt a scam, don't get caught :)

These things are way way overpriced second hand.

There are some people who try sell them for almost same as the new value. But if you look around you can find some decent deals.

Remember Macbooks hold their value.

Found a couple of Macbook Whites for ~R4k which is awesome in my books. Got sold by the guy before I could go see them though. Will keep an eye out either way.

R4K for a white macbook, obviously depending on specs is not to bad. If it is a newer model that is a good price.

It was 1.83ghz Core2duo, 4gb ram, 160gb harddrive, multidrive, etc, 13". Had Snow Leopard and iLife '11 on it as well. But got sold before I could get my hands on it.

The guy has another one, similar spec but damaged body for R300 cheaper. But I passed, don't want a crappy looking Macbook.

seen some around for 8500 for MBP 17" and 15", scammer u think? concidering going and having a look at them but dunno if its just too much effort....

check out secondhandmac.co.za too

Is it just me or does this sound cheap?

URGENT SALE

Price: R. 6500 onc
Name: Ralph Bronzin
City: Durban
Province: KwaZulu-Natal

Well depending on what apple release this week i might have the following for sale quite soon:

Macbook 13" (Aluminium body, Bought Octoberish 2008 - They later added these macbooks to the pro range)
C2D 2.4
4 gig ram (upgraded from 2gigs after market - not by apple. I do have the original 2 gig somewhere if you would like that as well)
500 gig Seagate Momentus Hybrid Drive

No idea what this is worth, make me an offer if your willing to wait for me to get my hands on a new one. Its in excellent condition, but of warranty. Hasn't had work on it (just my ram and hdd upgrade). Will give you my SL upgrade disc and the Leopard discs that came with it.

Battery can do about 2 hours on wifi and backlit keyboard + brightish screen. Can Stretch to 4 hours, but not too much more than that.

Thanks for the reply phiber, decided to get an iPad 3G instead of the Macbook. For the wife, it does everything she needs, and it has the bling factor :)

My mother donated her MB to my missus when she bought her air last month. It's the same range as yours and a damn fine machine. I do need to get her some more ram though. One nice feature that they discontinued with the Pro designation is the user serviceable battery.

I would be very weary when going second-hand, especially when looking in Junkmail or similar places. Why not save up and go for an entry-level machine straight from retailers?

I must say, it still an amazing machine and am still considering going for an SSD and waiting another year before I try upgrade. Let see what apple release and what the price points are. Really keen for a quad core, but dont want to go bigger than 13", its quite a dillema that i hope apple sort out for me :)
