Sedans vs SUVs

If you can't intimidate fellow road users, you're driving the wrong sedan.

Maybe the better point would be 'Why do you want to intimidate fellow road users?

Seriously, driving like the biggest ******** out there just to 'earn respect' is crazy. If the only way you can think of earning respect is by intimidating fellow road users, you need therapy, not a bigger sedan.

Exactly. Unfortunately that's the mindset of a certain percentage of SUV (or actually vehicle) owners in general. The people who I respect the most are the ones who drive like they have nothing to prove.

Haha you lot, that post was dripping with sarcasm. Sometimes I wonder...I waaa waaa waaa waaaa wonder how you get by on a daily being so serious.

A lot of people certainly want to immitate the SUV douches, "I don't care how many parkings I take up" - double parking style ....

For me, sedan. More boot space, lower fuel consumption, better handling, and more spacious. And not having to worry about spare tyres in weird places. Not to mention tyre prices!

(Obviously within a given price range - a 300K sedan vs a million Rand SUV are two different things).

Sedans often don't have full size spare wheels anymore.

Interesting debate, this.

Currently we have a Volvo S40 D5 and a Volvo XC70 in the garage. The S40 being the wife's daily. We have to sell one of them and currently we are thinking of letting the XC70 go, although I'm starting to think that might not be the best idea.

The S40 has adequate space inside, but the boot is really small. It does have a towbar, and I do have access to a Venter, though. We did take the XC70 to my SIL's farm the other weekend and it was myself, the wife, son and 2 Spaniels + luggage in the car and we were all very comfy.

To me it looks like an AWD Stationwagon with raised ground clearance is a very good compromise. If only I could convince the wife to take it over as her daily.

They're incredibly pricey (which car isn't), but I'm a very big Audi Allroad fan. Alot of the car comfort, good for gravel type escapades. Think Volvo is introducing an Allroad type (v60 CC) themselves.

Heh? I paid R110k for my XC70 with 75k km on the clock.

What sucks is how easy they are to steal. My mother had her bakkie's spare wheel stolen twice.

I have no idea if mine is still there. Better check! I know someone advised me if regularly park in a dodgy area to put on a lock on it.

I agree. To have the spare wheel underneath the car would keep me up at night. Unfathomable!

Hah. Apart from theft, the annoyance is that when you do need to change a tyre, the one underneath the car is covered in dirt and road muck.

To drive to the car wash with a tire full of dirt and road muck, inconceivable!
JHB people, man. Car wheels need to be shiny and free of dirt and road muck at all times or else your woman will wring your balls up in a vice. Hence it's a serious concern.

I do realize the irony of making fun of a location while I'm in Centurion. In case you are wondering, I do my best to fit in and my wife gets a beating every second week. We try to synchronize with the neighbors to have the melodic screams fill the air as a reminder of our roots.

It's a little difficult doing that when you're on the side of the road with a flat tyre, and you're staring at a muck-covered spare while you're wearing your smart clothes.
