The only reason Selebi was allowed to even stand trial was because he had fallen out of favour with the current ANC. In Mbeki's ANC he was completely untouchable -- just as in Zuma's ANC Shabir is untouchable.

Selebi will go to jail and, at best, will be used by the ANC as an example of how awesome they are at rooting out corruption. This will last until the next incarnation of the ANC remembers how useful it was to have a policeman talking to the mafia.

Former police commissioner Jackie Selebi has been released on R20 000 bail by the High Court in Johannesburg pending an appeal application of his 15-year sentence.

He has 14 days to apply, otherwise he has to report for prison after a lapse of 48 hours after 14 days.

I wouldn't be that fussed about "cadre deployment" if the cadres could just do the damn jobs they're given to do.

But seriously: national police commissioner in bed with the mafia for a few hundred thousand rand? That's not corruption: that's plain idiocy.
 
well, even if the guy spends one day in prison, it sends a message - that sentencing a corrupt person is possible.
hopefully that can translate into social action and voters getting off their butts and voting for somebody else.
not that the options are really all that great.

I asked on the first page if people think that he would have been caught if this bill was in working the last few years. I just answered blu's question as to what bill I was talking about.

It has no bearing on this case but I asked what would have happend if it did.

That bill would control print media - not the police.
 
Great news.

The fact that the trial has gone this far is in itself a good sign that the current ANC comrades in power have cast him to the wolves and will most likely let him spend some time in jail.
Selebi must have crappped himself when mBeki got the boot :)

Seeing the rest of the corrupt ANC being brought to book would be a sign that the wheels of justice are still working in our country, but that's just not going to happen.

He has 14 days to apply for LEAVE TO APPEAL.

There is a chance that it may not be granted !
 
The ANC made sure that this will never happen again by disbanding the Scorpions.

Kebble stole billions of which 1.2 million went to Selebi. I recall that he also 'gave' the ANCYL 20 million. Wonder where the rest of the money went to? Wonder who is going to prosecute the rest?
