Sensitive Stomach Thread

I can't remember the name right now, but my mom used to buy me little white pills which helped for stomach aches.

Its called Lomotil. We keep lots of stock of it. If our employees moans of an upset stomach, we just give then 2, and, Whola, there back at work.:D:D

No, it's not that.

It's Scopex, there I just remembered ;)

Yeah, I've also got that in my arsenal :D

Works like a charm, although I would rather get it all out.

Ahhh, our old friend (..mine too): IBS. I've had Bevispas (what's the box look like again?) ..which, it turns out, has the same active ingredient as Colofac - another of my old friends. My current friend is Buscopan which, I now read :p, is meant to stop the whole process from happening:

Butylscopolamine is used to treat pain and discomfort caused by abdominal cramps, menstrual cramps, or other spasmodic activity in the digestive system. When taken orally, it cannot enter the bloodstream or otherwise leave the digestive tract, so that it is only able to affect the smooth muscles of the digestive system as it passes through. It is not an analgesic in the normal sense, since it doesn't 'mask' or 'cover over' the pain, but rather works to prevent painful cramps and spasms from occurring in the first place.

As a bonus it's an S2 OTC medication so, should you need it (and when you need it you REALLY do!) outside of regular retail hours, you can head off to your local late/all night pharmacy (you do know where yours are, don't you?) and hopefully get relief.

But I've just made a new discovery: Lp299v which, sez the all-knowing-wiki, is a probiotic. Now, I haven't tried this yet (just picked up the flyer yesterday) but I'm all for something that says things like "clinically proven to assist in easing a troubled colon" and "95% success rate". The pamphlet I have here is from NutriLida which is an ass-tastic  Flash site! Besides it NOT being a med (having read those wiki links I posted) ;), this may be encouraging (lifted from the site, it's better to have it all here):

What is IBS ? (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
IBS is a functional disease of the bowel. A defined group of symptoms all indicate the presence of IBS. As a functional disease has no anatomical, physiological or biochemical abnormality explanation, it is diagnosed by the symptoms and not by medical examination or tests.

Symptoms of IBS
A diagnosis of IBS will be made when a patient experiences 3 out of the 6 typical symptoms for longer than three months without any other disease present.
These symptoms are:
Abdominal pain.
Irregular bowel function – constipation, diarrhea or both.
Urgency to suddenly have a bowel movement.
Abdominal swelling and distention (bloating)
Mucus in stool.
Feeling of incomplete emptying of the rectum.

Factors causing or triggering IBS
Infection or Gastroenteritis
Candida Overgrowth

- *IBS symptoms are increased with a candida overgrowth.
Stress(6) (didn't add the references links, they're there for the curious)
Diet(6)
Endocrine Imbalance(2)
Hormone Replacement Therapy(7)
Leaky Gut Syndrome
- *Increased intestinal permeability which causes sensitivities and allergies in the gut.
Antibiotic Therapy
- *Can lead to bacteria overgrowth in intestines. Produces excessive gas,
bloating and abdominal pain.
Lactose intolerance
FACT - Flora imbalance(2, 8)

- *Is assumed to be the most common and prevalent factor.

Why is a healthy colon important?
The colon cannot coordinate its function in a normal manner if it is not healthy:
Spasms affect transit/motility.
Hyper sensitivity – food & dietary factors.

How do I know if I have a form of IBS?
If you regularly experience any of the classic symptoms such as bloating, abnormal pain and cramps, accompanied by either frequent constipation or frequent diarrhea, then you have IBS and should seek a therapeutic treatment such as Lp 299v

Does stress cause IBS?
Yes, although not directly responsible, stress does trigger the onset of IBS symptoms.

Frequently Asked Questions:
What is the best form of therapy for IBS?
Many treatments are available, but traditional therapies are only partially successful.(3)
Lp 299v has shown to be a most effective therapy, enjoying a 95% success rate in alleviating IBS symptoms.(1)

What is Lp 299v?
Lp 299v is the first clinically proven natural solution for the treatment of IBS symptoms.

Why is Lp 299v so effective?
It is due to the action of acting as a physical barrier against pathogenic organisms resulting from its unique ability to adhere to intestinal walls. Lp 299v promotes good intestinal function, reduces bloating, abdominal pain and normalises bowel motility/transit time.

Is Lp 299v safe?
Yes, as it is a natural probiotic, it is extremely safe. Lp 299v may be used in conjunction with other medications and there are no side effects. Pregnant and breastfeeding mothers can use Lp 299v with confidence.

How long before Lp 299v delivers relief?
A minimum treatment course is 1 month. Resolution of symptoms depends on the severity of the underlying factors that contribute to IBS symptoms.

What can I expect with Lp 299v?
80% reduction in abnormal pain.
60% normalization in stool frequency.
95% improvement in IBS symptoms.
50% reduction of flatulence.

A final thing to add to the pharmacological list: Biral. Once upon a Sunday night in mucho pain given this and Buscopan together by the nice late night pharmacist at the hospital up the road, working on the theory that stress exacerbates the problem. Use it, don't use it ..up to you.

As to what sets me off: curry is verboten ..but I'm quite OK to consume chilli just about any time I like, go figure. I have a working theory that I can't go near those lovely big black mushrooms, currently too scared to go near even li'l button mushrooms too, dammit!

My ass is on fire right now. Seriously. On fire. I don't think I can handle another trip to the bathroom. That salsa I ate for lunch really, REALLY hates me. How do I make the pain stop?
... maybe skip the salsa as a start bru.

Yeah, I've never had a problem with the salsa before. Funnily enough, the hot foods don't affect me. I think it was just really bad luck that my stomach exploded the day I ate salsa :(

Wow. That is really helpful! Thanks. Please let me know how it goes with the lp229v, and where I could get some.

Oh god... Stomach gurgling again :(

I know a friend of mine suddenly had the same probs you're experiencing and his doc told him it that part of the blame had to go to all his years of eating the hot sh*t. Maybe the salsa that broke the camels a$$ :D. Hope you come right with some medication bru.

There are many different medications that you could try in addition to those mentioned above such as Spasmopep, Pectrolyte, Immodium, Peppermint oil, Calcium, Magnesium supplements etc. but I haven't found that any of them really help to a large extent. You could just end up spending lots of money and see little benefit.

I have found that jogging does help a lot though and presumably exercises to improve abdominal muscle tone such as crunches or Pilates etc. The whole digestion process depends on natural rhythmic contractions to propel food through the digestive system - any disruptions and you either have constipation of diarrhoea. If you jog for long periods of time the regular muscle contractions from your neck, shoulders, spine through the abdominal muscles, hips, legs, knees, ankles, feet etc. need to be carefully synchronised and this seems to restore some of the natural contractions in the colon. The muscles in the colon will also start to contract more reliably if they are well toned and have the correct balance of minerals. You may find that after several months of jogging that your digestive system is better able to tolerate certain foods etc. You should also be able to get a good idea about the state of your colon depending on how easy it is to establish a good rhythm while you jog or complete a long distance. Some people with severe IBS symptoms can no longer jog when their colons go into a spasm and can only resume again after a few weeks.

High doses of some of the anticholinergic IBS medications produce similar effects to those of extreme fatigue from long distance running etc. such as a complete loss of colon/bowel control. The medications though do not help to improve muscle tone or rhythm which is presumably why they do not help to improve the condition over the long term.

QFT: last time I saw my quack he pretty much *told* me to consider jogging to make things better, a la said here.

In related news: has anyone else developed an (morbid) interest in reading meds package inserts...? :p

I enjoy reading about all the bad side effects etc. Just interesting

Sorry, but this is more of an "oh God I need a support group to help me get through this horror" thread than a "let's gross everyone out" thread :(

***DO NOT READ FURTHER IF YOU ARE EATING***

My ass is on fire right now. Seriously. On fire. I don't think I can handle another trip to the bathroom. That salsa I ate for lunch really, REALLY hates me. How do I make the pain stop? :(

Seriously, go to your local chemist, and ask for a tube of Anethaine. This stuff works like a bomb when your ass is on fire, which happens to me quite frequently I might add... I still haven't figured out what sets me off though, and honestly it's because I haven't noticed any set pattern. What I'm fine with one day can give me horrible stomach problems the next.

Anethaine is a local anaesthetic ointment for just such things like this - it can also be used on insect bites etc. It's not too expensive IIRC - but then it depends on your definition of expensive. For instant pain relief, I consider it VERY cheap. I always keep a tube of the stuff handy in the bathroom. Use it just before you go - if you're raw, it can burn like a sumb1tch, but it deadens the area pretty much instantly, and you can poo till your heart's content without the agony.

And YES - IT MEANS YOU STICK YER FINGER UP YER ASS, but trust me, that is definitely worth it for the pain relief.

(And hey, who knows, it might turn you on)

EDIT: And for those of you who think this is a really odd subject - think about this... sensitive stomachs tend to end up with diarrhea (can never spell that damn word) for some people. Diarrhea is very acidic. The acid burns your anus, in some cases causing very painful bleeding, and makes it agonising to go to the loo.

So while this subject can be quite funny to discuss, it's no joke to people who suffer from it. - And although I suffer from it, I CAN joke about it.

Oh god yes! I am gonna buy myself some of this stuff on the way home :D:D:D

Thanks!

:(

Those of you who have it know exactly how much it sucks. My sensitive stomach is the bane of my life, I am dealing with horrific explosions and gas right now, so I figured I would start a thread about it in between mad dashes to the bathroom. What sets your stomach off? What are your remedies?

I apparently have something called "Candida" (look it up, with my stomach as it is right now, I'm not really in the mood to hunt for links), which, when it flares up, seems to give me Irritable Bowel Syndrome, which, in turn, makes me punish the toilet on a regular basis. Basically what sets me off is:

Sugar, wheat, yeast, cheese, any mold-containing foods, MSG, and so on.

I pretty much carry around a little pill box with me in which there is usually Betaparamide (for diarrhea) and Bevispas (for stomach cramps). I find that Kem-o-dine also helps for a really upset stomach, with Eno and bicarb for gas and bloatedness. I have also found ginger (in gingerbeer) to help a bit.

Basically, this makes my life suck. How do the rest of you with sensitive stomachs deal with it?

Ah been to see doc Shearer?

Ah been to see doc Shearer?

Haha, indeed I have, several times in fact :D

I should probably go back there to get him to prescribe me more "detox" meds for it, but right now I just don't have the money :(

I went on the diet and lost 8kgs in two weeks and got way better. Then Christmas came, and I went crazy :(

I am honestly wondering whether my stomach has something to do with my weight...
