Sentech Tower "OPTIMIZATION" - Bye Bye signal

If I was a sentech techie, I wouldn't want my contact details posted on a public forum. Besides, noone and LoneGunman will probably abuse the poor techies. Leave the process as is, just upskill the Helpdesk staff

<br />Claymore,

Report the problem and insist on getting a ticket opened concerning tower 12. This is the only way we are going to get things fixed.

I take it you are in Randparkridge area as well. Can you also NOT connect to tower 82 ?

I'mm do that - I'm in Weltevreden Park. The locator jobbie originally promised a "good" signal by Q1...

F*&****CK SENTECH

So, I patiently wait for my call to hear on the progress of my fault..... Nothing .... not a peep. I phone, get told they needed more information and that someone was GOING to phone me..... So basically they are telling me to F**K off until they feel like getting to it.

I am willing to accept that they are making changes to the network BUT to do so without notification / warning to possibly affected customers is unacceptable. All that was required is to run a report on the logs, see who logs onto tower12 and drop them a mail....

I've cancelled my previous ISP and am sitting pretty with no connectivity. (My own stupidity for thinking a service I've been using for 2 weeks would suddenly dissapear!)

THIS IS JUST SO DAMN FRUSTRATING !!!!!

Ok Rant finished... Now to put on my friendly voice and phone them again and again and again and again......

Flash, I'm the one who is giving their info out, because I already abused the **** out of them and got results

Those interested, JP and Basil also seems to know what they're doing

Why do you have to "put your two cents in"... but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

Hello Noone,

I appreciate the info you've given ;-)

Let's hope I don't turn one of there guys into a portable patch antenna by shoving things where they belong ;-)

oooooh

NOW - I get home and it would seem Tower 82 has been worked on ... Signal strength is right down... I'd better take a screen shot of the ZoneLocator - just to remind them I'm supposed to be in a good coverage area....

To be fair it does seem that they are setting the towers FAR better... Where 66 - HydePark runs out 82 - Randburg begins - 12 - Mintek takes over from there ... then a lovely dead spot all the way to my place... then 82 - Radiokop is around again ;-) YUMMY

regard.. what street you in... you say you about 2kays from 82 radiokop, im 2 kays from 82 radiokop and never had a problem.

Hey kbentz

Well, I'm lucky enough to be directly in line of the tower - on the opposite side of rock cotage... did the gps measurements - 1.89km....

It would seem that due to the relative positions I'm not going to get signal....

I'm now suddenly getting 25% from Tower 22 and 21% from tower 102 - both in the Fourways area ... I had hoped they had tuned the towers EVERWHERE properly ... dammit.

So, at least Sentech are comming to test the signal... but I'd guess I'm going to be stuck singal-less.... What to do What to do ...

i live next door to the sentech satellite farm, which is 82 radiokop, im going to take a ride up to rock cottage/ radiokop area later tonight and just ride aroun and check signal strength on the modem(dont have a laptop) anything 3 or 4 lights should be worthwhile hey, but hey thats a waste coz there is nothing wrong with your modem, ag i'll do it anyway, after punk'd and viva la bam on mtv....

ah! didn't see this topic before i posted my rant...

ugh. i'm down to 7% from 15% - that's less than half!

like you said, at least i can still connect. but it's sloooooooow. [:(]

guys... if it's not broken... PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE don't fix it!!! [V]

if all else fails... influence with hammer

Since the maintenance was done on tower 12, my signal has gone from 38% to 26%. I'm also in Randpark Ridge (Just off Molope to exact), keep in mind though, that I do have an external antenna, which I installed myself. What is nice though, my internet experience has improved. I almost get the full 32K download speed on a 256K Package. My ping times don't seem to have changed at all.

My 2cents on this is that I'm inbetween 82 (randburg metro) and 66 (hyde park) - I'm about 1km from randburg metro and maybe 2 to 3km from Hyde Park.

I normally connect to 82 (randburg metro), but yesterday noticed that I kept disconnecting - my modem has been in the same place for 3 weeks without an issue, always hooking up to 82. (altho I can only verify that when I connect via USB and not my firewall)

I couldn't get online the whole afternoon, so I did a bit of meddling and finally got a strong signal to 66 by moving the modem around, I then reconnected to my firewall with ethernet cable and so far have had no problems.

Perhaps I'm too close to randburg metro, but in a 'sweet spot' for 66 ?

This is all very "touch and go" and I really hope Sentech solves all the signal overlapping issues soon - so far I've been lucky, online offline for a few hours (as mentioned above)

aftermath, we're neighbours then!

we stay just off Molope as well. In that HUGE terracotta complex(Twin Oaks)

heheh. moved my modem back to the original machine it was one before. now all you guys that know what shyte i had with that machine are probably going "oh! you stupid arse!" but here's the funny thing

it works! perfectly! SWG connects, the net works - everything... and to top it all off - through Kerio!

BWHAHAH! I give up! Computers will be the death of me...

anyway, what i wanted to post about originally is that a few minutes ago I lost my signal completely! it went from three lights down to 1% so i phoned and flipped at the call centre, just to be told that they are working on tower 82...

guys, could we be told this in advance so we don't have the call centre don't have to be screamed at when you change something?

just a thought... use it... don't use it...

We're working on it - just takes time [:D]

What I don't understand is why all nodes was put in 5.7km mode.

As far as I understand the differences between 5.7km and 29km modes are:
1. 29km is less efficient because the tower allows a few more micro seconds for the modem to respond.
2. 5.7km mode are driving a few of us crazy as there is a mountain or building between us and the local tower.
3. The modes uses the same transmission power and receiver amplification. And as you (ProAsm) yourself said, an antenna improves transmission gain and reception gain by the same amount. Therefore the effect of distance can be completely cancelled out with a good antenna (provided LOS or near LOS).

So it seems to me that if all towers are in 29km mode, you'll have
plenty more happy customers, even if it means the tower is a bit less efficient.

A friend had a oppie between him and the near tower. He spent many thousands on antennas. Now he received the far tower at 38% (+- 70dBm). En hy stuur seker ook die rook uit daai toring uit. When he scans for the near tower with the dish, the far signal bounce off some metallic object, gets amplified by the dish and drowns out the faint signal from the near tower.

Sure there are people who will connect to a far tower when the near tower is temporarily down, thereby causing the network to become unbalanced, but they are the minority.

I've also been without a signal for the last 24 hours. Called tech support and they told me to turn off the modem and wait for the mist to clear. Phone 4 hours later again only to be told they working on the tower, when infact I asked that when I called the first time. Sigh. Went to the drive in this evening to stop myself from going totally crazy, got home, reset the router and it connected. YAY :)
Oh, we have the dish up now but there has been hardly any increase in the signal. Can't pic up tower 110 at all. Hopefully they stop playing with the towers and we can try and align the dish better.

I very much doubt if mist, cloud burst, hail or any weather effects would affect your signal.

It's really important to inform users, and support staff for that matter, of any modification on the network, even if it's 'expected' not to affect them.

This would save alot of hastle and angry clients screaming at clueless personel who really are not to blame, as they are as uninformed as the client.

I think I've lsot quite a bit of hair, and even have some gray ones, being on both sides of this situation.

Tower 110 - JHBGirl, are you near Horizon View Shopping Centre in Roodepoort?

"Less efficient"... yes by about 40%
Extended range requires more bandwidth.
Extended range destabilises the syncs causing serious spiking.
Extended range has slower download speeds.
Extended range causes very serious no connection problems (currently effecting many people - about 3 times the Sentech MyWireless forum members).
Woosh in NewZealand almost went bankrupt because of this exact same problem - today they cannot give their modems away.

Extended range is for farming communities who are several kilometers apart and are only to happy to have an Internet connection and not worried about the zillion things city people demand.

No, extended range in a built up enviroment is not option.

Already people on this forum are starting to notice an improved connection although in several cases their signal strength has dropped.

Granted there are those that will loose signal altogether, but will be covered by a Tower in Phase II and Sentech will work with these people. Fortunately there are only a few of them.

Johnny-c, we are abt 5.8km away from the Horison View tower, 126 as I understand it. We are 3.9km away from 110 (Helderkruin).
