The DA is nothing like the Nats. Read up on your history. The DA is descended from the DP, who were fighting for equal rights before the Nats even acknowledged that they might not be the master race after all.

I'm trying not to pass judgement, since I don't know the man's track record. That's part of the problem... who does? He's been low-profile until now.

I think that you're right about this.
As long as the DA remains as lily-white as it currently is, it is just not relevant to the majority of SAs.
Electing Trollip, Zille or Coetzee to lead the party would be more of the same.
Electing Seremane would alienate many of the current DA supporters, and won't convince very many who have not previously supported the party.
I think that the DA have managed to paint themselves a corner here.
It must not be forgotten that Seremane is a man who has lost his freedom through incarceration at Robben Island fighting for an ideal. I think that is a virtue. Furthermore, we was detained without trial by the previous government for a few years after his prison stint.
He has served Civic Organisations in advocacy and later, mediation and conflict resolution. He was the Director of Justice and Reconciliation for the South African Council of Churches, and Chief Land Claims Commissioner after the 1994 advent of democracy in the country.
Furthermore, he left the ANC on a matter of principle, even though it had a personal slant.
However, I doubt if his distractors in the DA will note his virtues and political experiance or the fact that he was one of the founder members of the DA. Instead they will assume that he is a lesser qualified politician than other white DA contenders because he is black? or may I be wrong? I doubt it.
Furthermore, after spending some three years of my life in Cape Town, I doubt if the DA will risk losing their coloured constituents by voting in a black leader.
It is interesting but somehow sad, voters might disregard his virtues, experiance and capabiliites and just regard him as a token appointment.

As far as I understand, the DA, and the DP have always stood for a system of meritocracy - appointing a person on merit regardless of race.
At the moment in the DA the candidate who seems head and shoulders above all her competitors in this regard is Zille.
For the DA to elect a black leader, because he is black would be actively going against the DA's policy of non-racialism. Likewise to elect a white leader to avoid losing votes would have the same effect.
The DA must elect who it thinks is most fit to lead and must convince it's electorate that they believe that person to be the most fit.
I believe that any racial bias shown whatsoever will only weaken the DA.

I think you are misunderstanding me a bit there. My short thread was highlighting Seremane's experiance in politics and as well as some of his accomplishments as some post members did not know him. I also highlighted the problems that will probably besiege his standing. Please do not reduce it to one sentence that tries to pigionhole my views

."Lily-white" is not "derogitory", I intended it to be descriptive of the general appearance of the DA. Apart from Seremane, how many other black representatives are there? In general, I think you'll agree it is overwhelmingly white. I really would like to be proved wrong in this regard, so show me proof if I've left anyone out.
If offense was taken I apologise to the lilies or to both black members of the DA.

With Seremane on board they are not so lillywhite.
Pure and honest window dressing, which is going to work perfectly.
The ANC will brake up as sure as the sun came up this morning. The question is not if but when. It will happen with lots of in fighting and back stabbing. Seremane will sit with a well organized party, with knowledgeable, capable people chosen on merit and not because they were black.
Who will you vote for?

Rooinek himself disagreed with your synopsis of his post.
He doubts that DA voters will be able to see past the fact that he is black despite all his achievements.
He doubts that they will risk loosing coloured voters by electing a black man.
