Seremane to lead DA

First of all Imonga,

Do not limit it to his stint in the DA.

He is a man who follows his convictions with action: went to robben island for 6 years because of his beliefs.

He has served Civic Organisations in advocacy and later, mediation and conflict resolution.

He was the Director of Justice and Reconciliation for the South African Council of Churches, and

Chief Land Claims Commissioner after the 1994 advent of democracy in the country.

Member of parliamnent in 1998

Founding chairperson of the DA

I think he does bring something to the table.

Most South Africans tend to vote along racial lines rightly or wrongly. If the DP wants to get more votes they are going to have to think about race as political tool otherwise for the time being they will stay a minority party.

The reason I'm limiting it to the DA stints is because most of the DA members seem to put party achievements as the main quality they want from a leader.
This is why Zillie is so popular!

I guess as long as they're still seen as the DP then they stand little chance to change their image.

The only people who think this way are people like yourself. Obsessed with their negroid identity so they vote for people who look like them.
The DA does not see race as important. Unlike the ANC, for example, who would never have Trevor Manuel as President because he is the wrong colour.
Talking nonsense as usual. But the ANC could make him minister of finance ????
What about Alec Erwin, Ronnie Castrils? The ministers that are supposed to be the wrong colour. :p {Edit} Or I forget Marthinus van Schalkwyk

Thats a great list, but those 'achievments' are neither here nor there.

Being a political leader (or in politics for that matter) does require you to have 'business' type qualites, because you are running a business.

Wrong. Shes a proactive politican and gets things done properly.

Thats why shes popular

Can you please enumerate those 'business" type qualities...?? Perhaps you could finish up with your reasons for believing that Seremane does not possess such qualities.

I never said Seremane doesnt have those business type qualities. I just doesnt show up on his list of achievements.

If each (or at least many of them) politician were to run their respective areas like a business, rather than for other reasons - SA would be better off.

don't disagree for the sake of disgreeing, getting things done properly is an achievement !!

Maybe for the ANC that is true, since they are running things as though they are also the owners of the business. Selling time with ministers, taking all the cash etc...

I am still thoroughly in the dark about these "business" qualities that Seremane doesn't have?

I dislike politicians immensely but if this guy can bring some sort of balance to the power structures in this country, then cool

This thread seems to have lost the plot a bit.

No-one said that Seremane didn't have business qualities, they just questioned if he did.

Though, perhaps business qualities is a bad word to use, and administrative qualities would be better. While I'm sure Matseppi-Casaburri and Tshabalala-Msimang were excellent leaders in terms of the struggle, they have proven to be shocking administrators.

So far, to most Capetownians at any rate, Zille has shown those skills. Seremane has not yet had an opportunity to show those skills. In fact, up until know, most of us have seen relatively little of Seremane.

I would very much like Seremane to emerge as the leading candidate, based on merit alone, since it would serve the purpose of broadening the DA's base, while (hopefully) not alienating voters.

Would you agree that administrative qualities are not the most essential for the role of the opposition party leader compared to that of a city mayor?

Hi Bageloo. I asked you a question earlier to which you did not reply. I would appreciate an answer.

In response to your point. I partly agree that is the case. However, there is still a substantial amount of administrative skill required, not least of all in the field of people administration, especially if the DA wants, at some stage, to become the ruling party, which I am sure they do.

Remember, that the DA doesn't have the ANC's strong voter support base, and will lose voters far more quickly if it has incompetent or corrupt people in its ranks. DA voters would not tolerate a Matseppi-Casaburri. Seremane has to have the skills to identify the right people and the strength to act quickly if members of his party step out of line.

Other skills that a leader of the opposition should have, would include most of Tony Leon's skills, with perhaps a greater deal of diplomacy.

He was a teacher,

He has several Civic Organisations in advocacy

He was Director of Justice and Reconciliation for the South African Council of Churches

and Chairperson of the DA,

Surely he has to have some administrative experiance?

Tassidar, I want to make it clear that this is not in response to you.

I believe that the greatest impediment to his candidacy is that those who can possibly vote for him will have an unintentional and unconscious bias against him, regardless of his merits and experiance, just because they do not want to vote just on the basis of race, even if it is clear that there is merit in his nomination.
