Hi all,

I was wondering if it was possible to make an inexpensive security camera system for home.

All I need is to have 1 or 2 cameras connected directly to a monitor. I don't need anything recorded or anything fancy. I just want live feed from the camera(s) to the monitor. Without an expensive DVR.

Is it possible for 1 or 2 cameras? If so, how would I go about setting it up?

Thanks

Edit: Budget is around R1000

What is your budget?

Edit: I'm also researching the options for my home.

That is ultimately the question...with these things there is no upper limit and budget and end result are very much linked.

I'd seriously suggest posting a bit more "real" info though...we've got a wide variety of people with vast knowledge here so try and present the situation "as is" and ask for an appropriate response rather than posting a question that you (one person with limited experience) feel is appropriate.

I'd say about R1000 - Maybe a bit more if that's too less.

....thats a tad low...

I was looking into this too and saw I will need at least R3999 for something reliable

For 1k you can buy 2-3 cameras only, or do you have a monitor?

For that budget the only option I can think of is 2 cameras, with 2 RCA-to-RF converters (then you tune each camera as a channel on your TV tuner), or quad view on a TV, (then you save money by not buying a display).

You can get maybe an old multiplexer to-do up to 16 channels on one display.

So for the selector box I would go for this

and camera's you can buy from the china man around the corner, I see the pricing goes from R170-R2000 a camera.

Edit: I don't trust BidOrBuy, but this would be a nice solution for the price, and then you can connect from you phone if you have a small network at home with internet access

Bid or Buy varies from seller to seller but overall they are very good. Just my two cents

I am looking into something like this as well but I need an IP camera that has the ability to upload snippets of recorded video into G-Drive.

Go to the flea market.

Buy two cams and ask them for a 4ch multiplexer and bnc-rca connectors and some premade power and video cables. That will sort you out.

Just buy 2 cams with PSU for about R1000 at the local china mall and connect them to the AV on your TV,
If you only have one AV available find an old VCR tune it to the TV and connect the other camera to the AV on the old VCR ,which will come up as a channel on the TV.
Use telephone cable or network cable with BALUNs to wire the system ,BALUNs are about R15 each at the local china mall.

I tried connect some 700p and 600p camera's to the PC TV tuner and VCR composite video input. It doesn't sync correctly, couldn't get any picture, just lot of noise.
