Sharing is caring

To my knowledge, you still need the line rental. Lets assume the line rental cost + uncapped = R1600 (1mbps)

1600 / 8 = R200 for a 128 kbps service... The going rate for uncapped wireless is +- R200 for 128 kbps service. Then you still need a licence, and account administration. End of the day, is it really worth it? Or just a lot of work to break even?

The journo ever heard or Frogfoot?

Or WUG's?

Each conecpt has been around for a long time and been running.

Problem with the example in the article is that though it's nice to share - the line speeds are not guaranteed by Tellkom.
So a 4mb line may actually just be 1mb line and then the thought of 4 (or more) people sharing that at the same time would make me cringe.

Also with 4 people hogging all of the bandwidth, on current Uncapped offerings, you'll be hitting your threshold levels ratther quickly and then still be throttled.

WUG's are a better option or reselling your Wifi/ADSL Hotspot with Frogfoot or something similar.

I'd hate to have to be wanting to play online, only to be facked over by my neighbour downloading porn :p Or the converse could also apply :D

Disclaimer: Never read the rest of the article after the 1st example in a Kompleks came across my vision.

Or you just share your line and your neighbours bring their own bandwidth.

License? Account Admin? I've been sharing my internet connection gratis to all my neighbours for years now. ICASA have better things to do like dream up poor legislation and put little yellow stickers inside cellphones.

This will not work because of the upload speeds! Work out. Sure, web browse and emails fine, but connecting each person to have a part or his own section on the line would be a bit tricky for joe bob. Why your own part?Neigbours will hog all of the line or things like gaming will be useless. Have any one here ever tried to use those shared 10mbs lines, tyger water front has it,there and the speeds sucks soo much. They spike up and down and the best part is the upload speeds are so tiny. CTWUG if you wana dc+

Yeah, lets celebrate the fact that our internet access and bandwidth is such a ridiculous rip-off that we have to share our tiny, piddling connections with half the neighbourhood.

How about a bit more "Ubuntu" from Telkom, MTN, VC, NeoTel, IS et al.

I am struggling to find a link that allows me to download a mesh-networking "operating system" that I can use to control a mesh network.

No uncapped ADSL in SA

Uncapped ADSL accounts in SA are dead - I think. Used to have one, only to discover a "reasonable use" limit of 20-30GB per month had been imposed. If anyone knows of an *actual* uncapped account, please let me know.

Anyway, some kind of pricing mechanism is probably necessary, for now. I believe that is why free hotspots have been disappearing in Europe, where I often travel. A few years ago, there were hotspots everywhere, just spilling out of the apartments, but now almost all are encrypted - including those in bars and restaurants where you often have to ask for a password.

The person who suggested sharing the ADSL line and having everyone buy their own bandwidth has the right idea. Many people are doing it like that already. Anyway, the idea is good - share as much as you can!

I shudder at the thought of every Tom, Dick and Harry clogging up the wifi spectrum with hotspots.

What we need is for i***sa to pull their thumbs out of their bottoms and sort out spectrum in this country.

And what if Telkom will not install a telephone line for you?

The ISP's would not like it if we did that, so to pressure them into waking up and do something.

I am seriously looking at WUG now. I mean, can't you share internet connections with WUG?

Yea...

As mentioned in this thread, the article author is -seriously- in the dark about wifi, thinking his idea is "revolutionary". Sorry, the article was so bad I can't restrain myself from posting that it is probably the worst thing I've read this month.

Same here, though I'm still trying to figure the actual benefit of joining the WUG. Sure, you become part of the community etc, but if you are not a serious gamer, what are the benefits?

Maybe it will turn you into a gamer, who knows :p

Err no! I have an Axxess Uncapped Express+ connection. I pull almost 100gigs a month through it. Uncapped means uncapped in South Africa, especially as you are paying almost R1000 for it.

Well, I have a friend in the CT WUG. I saw him using uTorrent to download stuff. What would be great it that one can download Windows 7 RC for example, service packs, trial software, etc. Rather than use my small 2GB cap for that, I can copy it from someone else who has downloaded it already.
