Sharks squad for this week's friendly games

http://www.sport24.co.za/Content/Ru.../24-01-2010-02-42/Alberts_selected_for_Sharks

Johannesburg - The Lions' No 8 Willem Alberts has been selected in the pre-season squad announced by the Sharks for the tri-series in Cape Town.

The contentious selection will not be tolerated by the Golden Lions Rugby Union (GLRU), who maintain they have a binding contract with Alberts and point out that he has not been "signed off" to play for the Sharks.

"We will definitely lay a charge if Alberts plays," Lions CEO Manie Reyneka said before the squad announcement by Sharks coach John Plumtree.

Springbok utility back Ruan Pienaar was not considered as he is undergoing rehabilitation.

The Stormers played Australian franchise the Western Force on Saturday night in the tri-series opening match . The Sharks will take on the Force next Tuesday and the pre-season friendlies wrap up with the Stormers hosting the Sharks next Friday evening.

"Obviously the contact side of it is important for us, as well as the new rules - the laws that the referees are looking at: tightening up on the breakdown and the scrummaging.

"It will be good for us to get used to those areas," Plumtree said on the Sharks website of what he would like to get out of the two matches.

The squad which includes 12 Springboks:

Forwards: Willem Alberts, Jacques Botes, Craig Burden, Patric Cilliers, Keegan Daniel, Jean Deysel, Bismarck du Plessis, Jannie du Plessis, Alistair Hargreaves, Ryan Kankowski, Gerhard Mostert, Tendai Mtawarira, Johann Muller, John Smit and Steven Sykes.

Backs: Monty Dumond, Adrian Jacobs, Rory Kockott, Patrick Lambie, Charl McLeod, Waylon Murray, Lwazi Mvovo, Odwa Ndungane, JP Pietersen, Andries Strauss, Riaan Swanepoel, Stefan Terblanche and Luzuko Vulindlu.

Fixtures:

Jan 23: 5pm Stormers v Western Force (Stormers won 54 - 12)

Jan 26: 7pm The Sharks v Western Force

Jan 29: 7pm Stormers v The Sharks

A whole stack of half time changes it seems.... Willem Alberts has apparently been given a run. Also JP, Odwa, John Smit, Botes etc etc so they are bringing on some big guns.

The Sharks:

15 Stefan Terblanche, 14 Luzuko Vulindlu, 13 Waylon Murray, 12 Riaan Swanepoel, 11 Lwazi Mvovo, 10 Monty Dumond, 9 Rory Kockott, 8 Ryan Kankowski, 7 Jean Deysel, 6 Keegan Daniel, 5 Steven Sykes, 4 Alistair Hargreaves, 3 Jannie du Plessis, 2 Craig Burden, 1 Tendai Mtawarira.
Replacements – from: Bismarck du Plessis, John Smit, Johann Muller, Jacques Botes, Charl McLeod, Andries Strauss, Odwa Ndungane, Patric Cilliers, Willem Alberts, Gerhard Mostert, Patrick Lambie, Adrian Jacobs, JP Pietersen.

26-0 now. And the great thing is it is not worrying me in the slightest! The joy of warm up games! ;)

Could the mods change the thread title to reflect 2010?

Hey Sharks supporters, forget this warm up game. ESPN Classic (231) is showing the 1990 Currie Cup final between N Tvl and Natal!

We have SA being beaten by Spain in WCS from 2002 instead :(

Not quite a classic

Whaha the force owned you guys!! 26-0. Yes its a warmup game, but you still need to be able to finish, and if you can't even slot a penalty through the poles just to get some points its says alot.

The Force will get a lot of confidance out of this since they were able to deny the Sharks of any points, were as the Sharks has got some homework to do! I want to see the games when these two side meet in a few weeks/months!

So did you watch it? Me neither. Perhaps Plumtree insisted that no penalties were kicked at goal. What would the point be? It is a warm up. You can kick penalties at goal all day in practice. No opposition is required for that. It is the new ruck/maul laws that you want to experiment with. The score board means nothing.

Feel free to troll elsewhere. ;)

That's a disappointing result given the quality of the Sharks lineup...

No I didn't have time to watch the game so I can't comment on too much detail, but the fact of the matter is that the Sharks weren't able to finish off. If they were able to do it, then they would've had points on the board. Yes, you don't want to kick at goal with every opportunity you get, but you have to do it at some point in time just to get some point on the board. As soon as you get points on the board you get confidance that you are able to score and that confidance helps a lot! If you can't get points on the board it doesn't help at all and just gets yourself negative!

I still maintain that big questions will be asked in the team meating today - because their defence was certainly not up to scratch (26 point to zero) and they weren't able to penetrate. This team should have done a lot better than they did!

You are making a lot of analysing considering you never saw any of it. Do you ever get to hear the results of the practice matches between the A and B teams? No! That is because the results really do not matter. The Western Force got whipped in their first match. They beat the Sharks in their next match. These matches are there to try things and to shake off any rust. We had Bismarck and Smit on the bench and started with our third choice hooker. We had two new Lions players getting a run. Plumtree stated that he wanted to test the new breakdown rules.

The idea was not to score 100 points. It was to get a good run out. Let's chat again when the Super 14 starts shall we? Out of interest who do you support?

Two Lions players? I only know about Alberts.

Does having a good run not at least mean breaking the lines, finishing off, getting a try against your opposition and keeping them from scoring? Even if you are trying stuff.
Surely you do not want to go into Super 14 opening game against the Chiefs and have doubts about your teams scoring abilities and also defense for that matter?
0-26 is not a good run IMO.
Just ignoring this result and saying it was just a practice match would be foolish. But if they learned anything from this outing and figured out what didn't work. Job done. Will have to see against the Stormers if they change their tactics and if they do better then.

I have no doubt that the Sharks will do well in the Super 14 but they do have a lot of work to do before 13 February.
