Should you wait for the iPhone?

its worth the wait

I have waited until now to get this phone , two reasons I never get over hyped tech as it always disappointed, two they take time to get the bugs out be it cars, boats and phones are no exception. I also wanted the true freedom 3g offers and wait for it unlimited 3g from voda!

lol the last part is going to be funny as I write to you I am being censored on the voda network MTN is faster and more reliable and I can should I so choose watch whatever or do whatever I want, not so with voda, they censored the hell outta the net connection.

The worlds newsmedia use the iphone and other enterprise class devices that depend on a good no correction a GREAT broadband ADSL connection and until that second tier bunch neotel and first tier wackos TelKOM get their sh%^& together we will never have a good world cup experience.

SO I am getting a 3g iPhone not because I have faith in voda ( i dont) but because I will be using it in other countries as well where the speed is up to scratch and where I CAN put another sim in as I read that the RSA version is going to be unlocked.

I'm due for an upgrade and I'm waiting, will let you know when I get mine ;)

Screw that, all the iPhone is, now that it has 3G, is 2003-compliant. This phone is pretty much nothing more than a status symbol. It is not worth the money and for the same price one could actually get a phone that has some basic features, you know, like the ability to send an MMS, or a flash for the camera... Or maybe, I dunno, the ability to play mp3 ringtones?

As with most Apple stuff, it is overpriced crap.

I doubt that, where did you read that?

its not a choice. as per ICASA regulations all phones sold in ZA must be unlocked. It came into effect if i remember right when number portability started.

:)

but yeah, Last week i was told by a voda lady that it willbe released in Oct-Nov :/ But I don't know how clued up she was or just trying to get rid of me for asking her questions :P

Me, I'm waiting for the Nokia E71. Sure the iPhone 3G is sexy & stylish, but I think the E71 is a better, more usable 'phone'.

Now I have a very specific definition for what a 'phone' is ... every feature must be easily operatable with one hand, and the E71 (& current E61) allow this with their (real) keyboard & navigaton joystick.

I would have waited but -

I currently have the 1'st gen Iphone (running on ver 2.0 software), and just to point out the biiiiig negatives about it imo.

1. No SMS Forwarding. You can't forward a joke, important address details or any message for that matter to another person or phone.

2. The abovementioned would have been easily bypassed with a "copy & paste" option. Another big feature missing. Nowhere on the phone is it possible to copy and/or paste any text, not even Safari (the internet browser)

3. Bluetooth: I'm yet to find a phone that is compatible with my phone to send anything to each other.

4. The 3G usage on the new version is going to go through uor pockets like sweet cake if you do not disable the automatic mail checking, gps etc.

All of the above can possibly be solve vi 3'd party apps if the phone is jailbroken, but thats bordering on some legal or warranty issues I'd think.

Ok, thats my 2c but the fact is I'll still be getting the 3G version as my company I work for is going to roll it out to our whole I.T dept.

cheers

The new one really can't send MMSs, has no flash and no mp3 ringtones??

Hopefully Nokia will drop their prices etc on the N series.. and I can pick one up!

Don't care about the Iphone. People had it @ the office for months... very "cool", but IMHO... The phone is just hype! They paid R6k - R8k for that phones. It's just stupid!

Depends on what price and package they are offering. If no good then might go for HTC diamond.

I decided not too wait as our office will get one soon anyway - one of our guys is doing mobile development. I'll wait and see it is any use as their have been serious questions about its bluetooth functionality - not to mention other things.

Big issue I see is the iPhone is like the Blackberry (we have one @ work) - rather useless unless you subscribe to the "added value services"... and this just adds up to your bill - $ cha-ching $

It's purdy and all but unless Vodacom makes the iphone as inexpensive to operate as the blackberry I'll give it a miss for now.

No mention of the HTC Touch Diamond - it really is the only competitor to the iPhone currently. I imported mine a month ago - It really is fantastic

I paid just under 5k but I had it couriered (was here in 72 hrs thanks to fedex) and the R/$ was about R8 at the time.

The GPS uses Google Maps doesn't it? Last time i checked Google Maps was not very complete for RSA - very few street names, etc... Am I missing something obvious here? Do Apple apply their own layer to Google Maps?

From the article it seems that the main thing in the iPhone is its browser. They say it comes from the Safari browser found on Apple computers and that this is soooo much better than any other browsers out there.

Now I have found that the browser on Nokia Smartphones (N and E series) is pretty amazing - even the guys at GSM Arena thinks so.

The good news is that you need not buy the iPhone for its browser - cause you get that browser already in other phones made by a company that practically invented the digital cellphone and was so inovative they made their main competition sell out to the japs.

Behold the user agent string from a Nokia N82 :

Mozilla/5.0 (SymbianOS/9.2; u; Series60/3.1 NokiaN82/20.0.062; Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1)
AppleWebKit/413 (KHTML, like Gecko) Safari/413 UP.Link/6.5.0.0.0

For the less educated - a user agent string is what a web browser sends a server as part of a page request. You will notice in this user agent string the N82 identifies itself as Mozilla 5.0 based with AppleWebKit/Safari 413 extensions.

'nuff said.
