One reason why I'm not using it. I am yet to find an app with unread badges for WhatsApp that actually works.

+1, I tried Whatsapp notifier and it seemed to break more than it fixed!!! Not sure it was coincidence but Whatsapp push notifications become very erratic after I installed, tested and then uninstalled this app, so much so that I had to install Push Notification Fixer just to get things back to normal...

Yet WhatsApp for iOS has this feature built in
It's a feature built into iOS. Android apps don't always take advantage of this.
BTW- Nova Launcher Prime seems to support global notification badges, in conjunction with Missed It:

It doesn't support apps that don't expose the service API's, like Whatsapp, unfortunately.

You can but it has limited functionality in terms of badges, covers only your basics while Missed it appears to cover any app you select!!!! Really awesome!! Thanks Maverick!!!

If you play around with it, you can get a very unique-looking set of notifications. I'll rummage around for a screenshot of something I did not too long ago...
