I have seen a visually similar surface finish in new Swatches. Is this becoming a trend in watchmaking, or is it just Swatch?

I don't know to be honest, I don't really follow the latest trends in jewellery (which is really what Swatch is).

It started by the original bezel being severely scratched up and, with it being black, there was no way I could just leave it like that. So, the old black surface finish obviously came off when I started re-finishing the bezel to get rid of the deep scratches (I'll post a pic of the process in the Horology thread). Because I wanted to add colour to the bezel again, and not leave it with the normal stainless finish, I was trying to think of a surface treatment that's hard wearing, but also very thin in order to preserve the outer contours of the bezel ring. The light came on when I cleaned one of my guns one day (which was Cerakoted) and figured that would be an interesting, hard wearing surface on a watch that's going to endure a lot of wear and tear. As much as I hoped my idea was somehow unique, you clearly dashed that thought when you brought up your post :D

That is pretty actually. Cerakote is very very thin, so getting a textured finish is dependent on what you've done on the base surface. You can get a smooth finish if you polish the base, or you can give it various levels of texture based on the size and type of the beads used when you bead blast the surface prior to coating it. Then again, you can also affect the Cerakote result by baking it to different temperatures; the higher you bake it, the quicker/smoother the finish is going to be. Lots and lots of variables, which is great because you can get different finishes using different techniques but the same materials.

You know full well it is impossible to buy any Sub at RRP due to the instatwit hype over the last decade. Even the worst two-tone, poo-dialled Datejusts, unloved Airkings and Milgauss, etc are fetching premiums on the grey market.

The idiotic things the hypebeasts do to fellate their 'ADs' for the privilege of getting on the list and spending their own money beggars believe.

Anyway, lots of people have eyes and simply prefer a Seiko/Grand Seiko, Blancpain, Pam, Doxa, G.O, Omega or JLC diver instead of a Sub. Choice in design is good and appealing. They save a ton of cash, have the watch that appeals to them and avoid all the baggage, massive markups, waitlists and risk of being murdered for Rolex.

I comment as a Sub owner.

EDIT: I see they use DHL now, probably why it's more expensive. To be honest, I much prefer DHL over UPS (each one of their 7 shipments in Jan-Feb was a nightmare)

On Komandirskie.com you have option between UPS or DHL. I note the prices are now RUB3005 (R540) for UPS and RUB4181 (R753) for DHL.

The watch I really have my heart set on is sold out at the moment.

But if you want to go ahead I will get a few of their nice bezels and a strap as I will no doubt get the watch in the future once it becomes available and want to pair it with another strap and bezel.

I see the Vostok watches are far cheaper on their own direct website (online.vostokinc.com) but they don't ship to South Africa and don't have DHL. Meh.

Yeah I'm in no rush to get one. I'd rather wait a little, provided we can still get them in future. It's more for curiosity sake anyway. If a few people get Vostoks it makes sense to scratch the itch. But kind stupid just for one watch

Agreed, Rolex pricing is completely out of whack due to their popularity. Your Sub must be worth a packet right now.

My grail is the GS SBGA415G, stunning piece but at 120k I don't think it'll ever happen.

It's really great as are any of the 3 hander Spring Drives with textured dials.

SA doesn't seem to understand Grand Seiko so you may be able to pick one up on the 2nd hand market at a great price. I'm pretty sure I saw a Snowflake on Topwatch for well under expected value a while ago.

Having a bit of fun with my new overhead RGB photography light. No touchups or post processing - just the way it came out of the camera. It's amazing how playing with the colors can change the feel of the scene (forgive me; I'm a photography noob so this still fascinates me)

Edit: I just remembered; they had a sale on Valentine’s Day so it was a little cheaper when I bought. That’s what pushed me over the edge to buy new haha

I kinda folded and grabbed an SKX007 and 011 today, although these aren’t new, but together cost less than what I paid for the 009. They will need some slight cosmetic work based on pics I’ve seen. Hopefully there aren’t too many aftermarket bits added

still umming and ahing, because although I think this is a good classic, which eventually wont be available, I still think value plays a role, and the movement is honestly a bit junk. no hacking/hand winding is kind of crap.
hardlex I can live with.
the 22mm strap width is also a "problem", so that's another $100 for so for a decent beads of rice + a canvas

I've got a Jubilee coming in with those watches which looks pretty good. It's not folded but solid links. I'll see what it is like as it was about 40 EURO. The grain of rice one is a little more difficult.

Yes, 7S26 is a k@k movement. I'm actually debating replacing the ones I have here with proper Seiko NH36 movements as these cost me around $60'ish (unbelievable how cheap they are; even from authorised distributors)

As mentioned earlier, I've pretty much standardised on Archer canvas straps and they're around $20, helps if you order a few different types and ship with standard shipping, then it comes to around $25'ish landed. I've also ordered in a few of their Nylon straps to check out; I prefer these to the NATO straps as they're not just one strap that feeds through the spring bars, but proper separate upper and lower straps with quick release springbars. Sit's much nicer on the wrist than a NATO strap.

What I didn't get was orange straps to go with the SKX011 (just for fun), I might get some on my next order.
