Signal to migrate

What is the point? We have 4 channels... Half of the country can't even afford electricity when it IS available, let alone a decoder on top of that and a TV they don't have!

Good point :o

How much can you watch on those 4 channels  the number of program you can count on one hand.

will also be able to better track licence fees by means of subscriptions to the new service

Heh? Wot is this mamparra talking about ???
This is terrestrial DVB digital.
How exactly do they intend to achieve that I wonder?

Ian Develing says there are also discussions within the industry and the DoC that the STB should be used for all smart cards, particularly now that four new pay-TV broadcasters are coming onto the market.

Since he's talking smart cards (ie satelite / pay TV), he wants to combine DVB land digital tuners with satelite decoders and all their various decryption decoders for the various operators.?

Wow, hang onto your pants when you hear the price of one of those babies.....

It needs to be done. There's actually a lot of logic behind the move. We should get it done sooner rather than later.

agreed

best thing about this will be the spectral effiencies - the so-called digital dividend which should open up more frequency for other uses

I always wonder about the poor....when push comes to shove, they can afford the latest and greatest cellphones and afford "pay as you go" with no apparent problem.

I think there will be some kind of govt subsidy and when the analogue signal does eventually disappear there will be a mad rush for decoders....poor people included.

Best thing about this might be that we start getting some digital TV's in this joint finally instead of the analog 4:3 cr@p we're still getting!

Public broadcasting should be free to air - with a good mix of education, local content and entertainment - if the SABC cannot make a go of it they should open it up to others - public broadcasting is not another cash cow there for the milking - like there SMS dictionary at two Rand a pop

Word of Warning

Word of warning:

Needed to buy a 2nd tv and went into local hi-fi corporation about 2 months ago.

Have digital tv - was lucky enough to buy overseas 8 (EIGHT!) years ago already so not stupid - although never been able to use it's dvb tuner yet.

Asked salesman what tv's he had that were digital.
Answer: " Sir, all the high tech LCD & Plasma High Definition are digital."

Spent half an hour examining each and every one - NOT A SINGLE TV IN THE WHOLE SHOP WAS!!
The whole bang shoot are still analog! Utterly Pathetic! Only in africa can they get away with this!

The sales people don't know their mouth from their ass. Buy a 20 grand tv - you'll still have to buy the STB when they come out - which won't be cheap if they intend integrating satelite receivers and digital tuners in the same box as the article and that idiot Ian Develing is suggesting.

No where near the 500 bucks they talking about anyway.....IMHO

As a side point, that idiot says; quote: "The state broadcaster, which has a 65% share of the TV audience market, will also be able to better track licence fees by means of subscriptions to the new service"

How? Wait! Wot did he say? Subscription service?
Is he serious!!
Yipee kayay ........M...........F.......:D I'm Gone & not subscribing to SABC cr@p!

Perhaps the state broadcaster is going the simm card - pay tv route (is that constitutional?).

But sadly, they probably too greedy, but would have been great for me. Now you can refuse to subscribe and only claim to watch dstv, or, like me - public boquet and dvds - can't force tv licence anymore simply cause I can receive a signal.

But like Depeche Mode says: The gabbing hands, grab all they can, all for themselfs, afterall, everything counts in large amounts.

So chances of that are prettty slim they would go that route, no matter what that idiot is talking about. :(

Have I got a digital TV? check thread http://mybroadband.co.za/vb/showthread.php?t=103505
