I'm using Vista and when I upgraded to Skype 4, I found that my mic was dead.
I used Vista's sound set-up to default my mic and speakers to the rear socket on my PC and they worked correctly in the Vista tests.
I found that Skype, in its wisdom, only showed one mic input and this turned out to be the problem, as the input it had chosen was the unused front socket.
The fix? Go into Vista's sound settings and disable the front mic.
I hope this helps someone!
