SLR Tutorial Site

Great links! Thanx everyone for posting?
Do you also get camera specific courses/tutorials, say for Nikon?

no need to buy a new camera, its the lenses you want to perfect on...If you like taking portrait shot, get yourself a portrait lense approx R1000, wow F stop goes right down to 1.8 - awesome detail with portraits

Practise your shots - go back to the manual, you will see your shots will improve...

Portrait lens for R1000? What drugs are you on, dude? Add a zero and you are approaching the ballpark for a decent portrait lens.

Fantastic Plastic, Nifty Fifty, call it what you want is basically a 75/80mm equivalent on a crop factor SLR so yes, it makes an almost perfect portrait practise lens for silly money

What Deezil says ;)

A good portrait lens will provide excellent bokeh. Haven't come across 50mm lens of any maximum aperture that does that yet. And 75mm is too short to be considered a portrait lens. You should be at about 105mm minimum, otherwise you're going to be right on top of your subject and from there perspective becomes too unnatural for a head and shoulders shot to make a flattering portrait.

Bob and I disagree. http://www.bobatkins.com/photography/tutorials/portrait_lenses.html

BTW - 50mm on a Canon APS-C is 80mm.

I tried working with even an 85mm on FX frame and felt I was too close to the subject for there to be a comfortable working distance.

Some of the UK SLR magazines contain some nice tutorials and projects. They are a bit pricy but really worth it.
Got most of my help and inspiration from them.
