Smartphone war: the latest Vodacom stats

Driven by the under-16 market with their BBM addiction...

thus far the only company that offers smartphone friendly packages is RBM, that's the main reason for the slow uptake of Android devices

We'll see shortly if Mr Uys holds up to his deal and releases data packages for Smarthphones similar to BIS

Like pop music, the worst is number 1 ;)

+1

Vodacom's smartphone packages have no value, other than BIS.

Blackberry's anomalous local success can only be attributed to the expensive mobile broadband costs and the half-empty promise of "Free Internet" that is BIS.

Dropped our 13 y/o off at a birthday party the other day. All the BB Curves were lined up in a row on the table. 17 of them.
Just like all the Blackberry haters lining up on this thread !

The other posts in this thread are correct that the biggest take up on Blackberry is because of it's social networking and perceived value for money. I am still on a Blackberry contract with Vodacom that has about 18 months to run. My biggest issue is the slow speeds I get trying to browse to any site on the device. It is so slow that I consider it absolutely useless for anything other than eMail and BBM. I did a test a week ago with a MTN Blackberry user who was loading pages in half the time mine took. Vodacom do not seem to be addressing this (besides the PR disaster around capping all BB users). If they are seeing such a significant increase in new BB users, why are they not addressing the backend link to Blackberry to increase speeds to an acceptable level? Surely there should be more than enough income from all the new contracts to justify this?

At this point jannievanzyl was absolutely correct in saying that the typical Blackberry user, uses less than 50Mb per month. Mine is so slow I just don't use more as I get frustrated with it taking nearly 2 minutes to load a web page.

I think many of the Blackberries also go to people who go out to buy a cellphone. They don't do 5 months research beforehand, and they don't consider it a fashion statement.

So they walk into a shop and after asking around the Blackberry deals are obviously going to appeal much more to someone like that.

Sold.

Nokia phones possibly.

Thats what I first thought, however if you are gonna do a smartphone wars article, why leave out Nokia/Symbian? That would be a lot of devices on the network...

No probs on MTN.

Sounds like the article is bias, to leave out another 2 million smartphones seems odd as it gives the impression that Android and IOS is actually in the running in this country when their actual sales is very low.
