Smartphones: What does the future hold?

Will never ever forget the day I got my iPhone 3G....WOW!! Just WOW!

I ditched my SE P990i & simply could not believe how slick & quick the iPhone was compared to anything I have used before.

And you know what? Its two years later, I am listening to a cool music album right now, while I'm typing this.

Well done Apple!

*I am moving to Android now, but has promised myself not to ever sell my iPhone 3G. Just too many good memories.
 
i would like better screen technology (especially in direct sunlight) . and improved pixel density across all devices.

and as murraybiscuit said, better cloud services. HTCSense 2 is getting there but not there yet. i like the remote control feature.
 
my 2c

nokia will become void, because you cant use any app to communicate with other nokias or other platforms: just text and voice. and they wont ever go android.
blackberry will become semi-void (and i am a blackberry user), because now android and iphone can do messenger apps ,and if blackberry chooses to stay with their current high pricing, people will opt for android / iphone.
which leaves us with android and iphone.
steve jobs is so full of nonsenes - no flash , jada jada jada jada : android has none of this.
what jobs has to consider is the new range of android tablet/phone ubiquitous units, will definitely cause the ipad/iphone to shudder.
wouldnt like to see any platform fail, as it wont chase the other platforms to progress
but i see it like this : its android vs iphone in the future, unless blackberry drops prices and gets loads more awesome apps.
we thought we were spoiled by bbm and good internet usage, now that is basic and that means we move on to apps.
 
WinMo7 and Sybian are not Word call IMO....

AG BS man, it had been perfected in winmo, and java OS's before that, Apple was just being full of shyte....
 
i dont understand the big hype over what apple contributed to the smartphone because the only real thing it did was make the UI more idiot friendly. The first iphone was not even really a smartphone as u could directly compare its functionality with nokia s40 devices.

As for the future of the smartphone, i can see it heading to where the pc is now. U would be able to buy a blank phone and be able to load any open source OS yourself i.e meego or android. Ofcourse just like the macs of today the iphone might still be around for those that want the status of owning one but it wont be that much popular outside the us imo.
 
There is a spelling mistake last line of article. Fix it it unacceptible!. Hehe. To guy above if you buy a new pc there is Windows on it? Lol. To guy who said that Nokia failing lets wait and see about Meego. If it's god and takes off that with the good hardware of Nokia will put them on top or close to top again.

To all the Apple fanboys. I agree WinMo could do all that stuff long ago. If MS can fix that long list of negatives on Windows Phone it will be good. Gotta wait and see. I agree that Android will be the OS for now with HTC Sence. That is why I'm getting a Android.

I don't know why you say that! Did you use an iPhone at all at the time? It was the first phone you actually wanted to browse the web on, because it's browser was so fast and powerful. It showed that a full touch phone could be just as usable (or even more) than one with a keyboard. And many other things

Opera Mini was a great browser. It still is. Although it doesn't have flash support. And Opera Mobile for symbian was also brilliant although it wasn't free. The touch screen keyboard I'll agree on.
 
I only partially agree with the article .. its unfortunately a fairly typical apple fanbooi response.. Its really not fair to compare the final apple products with the smartphones / IPAQ's of old etc, the hardware has become exponentially more powerful .. allowing for full integration of UI layers that made the smartphone experience tolerable. Compare the hardware that was launched on my Sony Ericsson M600i about 4 - 5 years ago (I waited patiently to be one of the first in SA to get 1) .. the Sony was barely a 200mhz processor with limited graphics capability and a transistive touchscreen. But with symbian UIQ3, I could browse the web, read ebooks, listen to music, watch wmv video .. and that was 5 years ago .. that stuff is as old as the ark now .. now you go back slightly further .. nokia communicator, nokia e60 .. these were offices in your pocket .. YEARS before apple even got out of nappies ..

So really .. thanks for the simplistic view that apple "created" the modern smartphone ... but thats just not true .. we need to pay homage to blackberry, nokia, Sony and Symbian for that .. it may be past its expiry date, but symbian was the seed that sprouted a generation of keen smartphone users, years before apple claimed that title .. and if there had been 1GHZ snapdragons around 5 years ago .. im positive apple would be dead in the water by now.

Anyway . . enough rambling .. time to plug in my 2 year old sony experia (with SPB) .. while I continue shopping around for the best deal on a Desire HD, now that my contract has expired ...
 
Yeah I used and saw all those gadgets. I agree, Apple didn't invent the modern smartphone. It's about the implementation just as much as the features.

My dream phone:

A credit card sized device, that from the user's POV, is basically a touch screen. It has a formidable array of interfaces, including the latest version of RJ-45 (which in my dream phone will be flattened to credit card thickness). I'll be willing to accept only 1 TB storage space, after all, this is only my phone, not my PC. A projected keyboard makes typing easy, while the touch screen can act as a mouse. The built-in projector is capable of projecting a 17" image where the ancient computer screens used to be. Power supply is either super cap, or for charging, magnetic inductive coupling.

Connectivity is fairly simple - I don't want to know about it. It must simply be.

Finally, before I get back to work, this card-sized device must be flexible. I don't want to break it when I accidentally sit on it.
 
Superior phone makers aside, 5 to 10 years from now I think the handset market will still be dominated by non-smart Nokias running either Series40 or Symbian or a mix of the two.
Smartphones will by then be linux based, most likely with MeeGo having the biggest share or on an even share with Android.

Agree with you. I think the author bought his first "smart" phone (presumably an iPhone) only 2 years ago and knows absolutely nothing about other OSes and applications. What a BS article.

Don't be so hard on him, he is an apple fanboy, so he needs to do this kind of thing. If you understand fanboism then its not such a bad article really.
 
WTF, thank Apple for what? Bringing nothing new in a shiny box/tin. iPhone, a step back in time wow, cut and paste: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Smartphone. iPad, less flexibility than ancient tablet PCs http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tablet_personal_computer.

If the author had actualy done some research I would not be posting. Apple does do one thing well, packaging and marketing. They make their product very intuitive (a great thing) so that you only need one brain cell to operate it (so do not want to be in the target market for their products). Credit them for what they have done well, not for a technology marvel.

lol yeah, because before the iPhone all phones were massive capacitive touch screen multimedia devices that rotate the screen smoothly when you flip it around with an easy to use UI running thousands of apps, playing movies and streaming YouTube.

minor UI improvements? ....sure. :D
