Outlook Express...?

The larger the attachment, the longer the file will transmit. Time to transmit = (file size / up-link speed), (64Kb/s up-link on 3G, 384 max on HSDPA), so if you have a small timeout value, it will come up with smaller files, etc.

I've found two issues here:

1) Setting the send timeout longer will make the message go away (till you hit the next size point)

2) The error message seems to not actually stop the mail going out. Check this by sending the mail while watching your up-link speed, if it does not stop when the error message comes up, the mail is still going out. Or test by sending yourself a mail.

If Outlook Express is beeing used, then the timeouts mean something diff. The timeouts that you set is when Outlook Express hasn't heard anything, or spoken to the mail server. In *theroy* outlook can sit the whole day sending one email and it will never timeout. Here is the catch....Outlook Express *hates* large messages. So Slak, how big is the attachment ? Maybe try and installing another email client (Like Thunderbird etc.) and see if it's better.

When we deployed a mail server, we used Outlook Express to try and kill the server. We got to about a 100meg file...anything larger and the client timed out. After blaming the server for a while, we switched the client to Outlook (2003 the one from office) and we could go up to around 180meg (iirc). We gave up at 200meg with Thunderbird :) - This was over LAN btw ! *phew*

Hi all

Thanks for the replies - I didn't make myself clear I think - normally I have no trouble sending attachments (via Outlook), but for a few hours yesterday anything with an attachment wasn't moving. It seems to be fine today.

V3G - clients didn't receive the emails that the error messages referred to, and I could see that the upload graph (in dumeter) looked patchy (if that's not too untechnical a term!).

I would not use their SMTP or e-mail if my life depended on it. I get uncomfortable when any provider hosts to many of my services.

Drug dealers give away drug to get you hooked and using their products, service providers give free e-mail.

I do not use there free email, but I do depend on there SMTP for my outgoing mail. This is a basic ISP service and I do not see why I should have to resort to a slower solution like gmails SMTP server. Just by the way, it has now been 15 hours and I still can not email certain recipients.
 
Ok, now I am pissed. Same errors again today. V3G what is going on here?

Sorry, I'm a bit dof here as I am not an IT person at all: guy I was trying to send mail to told me that my server (vodamail) had been blacklisted. I got this undeliverable notice:

Basically the following happened:

- Some idiot got it right to spam using smtp.vodacom.co.za, finding a clever way to get around all the anti-spamming rules we run on the box.

- Spamcop blacklist the smtp server.

- Some of your mail bounces, depending on where it goes.

- We start the unlist process but it takes a while. (hours and hours...)

- By the time you checked it on Spamcop, it was unlisted already.

You can safely send mail again.

Obviously if you use the relay, it will be presented as the spammer and not the $%^& spamming.
I know that SAIX has a whole range of IP addresses used for smtp.saix.net [regional & loadbalancing etc], and when one or more of those IP addresses is spam-block listed, what SAIX does is simply change the spam-blocked IP address to another IP address in the same range, and then request the de-listing of the spam-blocked IP address(es).
