Hi guys,

My SIS661FX Chipset based s478 board is fried. You can't buy the stuff anymore (at least not from any of the mainline suppliers in Cape Town), so does anyone have such a board lying around at home that they'd be interested in selling? Or does anyone know of any retailers in CT that still have stock...?

Much appreciated.
SW

yeah, Socket 478 is out!! even the old AMD XP's wich was socket 462, even socket 754(old AMD XP 64bits is out. Socket 939 is also fading out to the new socket AM2.

Its a tuff world. If one doesn't sell and upgrade each 6months, your going to have to sit with that PC for years and years, or sell it for peanuts.

Is that for an Xcube or something? Otherwise any particular reason why you don't just upgrade to a new board?

I have a socket 478 board/box with a P4 cpu lying around gathering dust, but you're a bit far [me being in gauteng]. I also have an Aopen Xcube with that exact board [SiS661FX] which i currently use till it breaks [or sell it so i can upgrade ;) ]

No its for a std desktop. Reason I don't want to upgrade: Because I will obviously need new to purchase a new processor and memory and gfx card, and that kind of money, i simply do not have.

Thx anyway..

What is the speed of the cpu and what would you want for the MB & CPU?

Can't find it nowherez, sorry. You will mostlikey need to upgrade or buy a secondhand one.:(

Well you could go back to were you bought it... and they will say... ohhh no, no no... that's obsolete

Then you could tell them that the prescription law requires them to keep spares available for a three year period (used to be five) - They will then say... prescription what, and after you make it clear that you will not go away, they will call someone in power who might say one of two things

1. Sorry we do not have the board, please leave

2. We will try and get the board but no promises

in the case of (2) you might get the run around for a few months or you might get the board

In the case of (1) you can then take them to the small claims court, the info for doing this is a sticky on the off topic thread

When they get a letter of demand from you they might suddenly find a motherboard, but don't count on it, when they get a summons to appear in court, again they might suddenly find a board, but at a price... which you could turn down and say you would rather settle it in court, thank you very much

You might finds that in all that time, suddenly a cheaper board has suddenly become available and you can hop out at that point.... which might take a good few months, so if someone has a second-hand board it will save a lot of time and effort

Other than that, I have to say it is a pure show that the local dealers give to their customers, the bottom line is that it costs them money to keep items in stock, and companies are taxed on this , as it is counted as stock and therefore profit, there is however a very simple work around for this, and I am sure that most companies have got this sorted...

So at the end of the day what you have here is that someone wants to be rich, and if that means that they do it via the service department, well there you go, the great South African dream must be sort after, you need to have three cars, two or three houses so you can rent one out and live on that, have a business that runs its self, have a job that you do not have to do any work, and even have a sideline that gives you an extra income

Do you think I am being a bit un-fair to local dealers, well how many of them took back motherboards that had expanded caps that was clearly a factory fault

Rant over

; ) - Dragonlogos :)) nice rant :)

anyway

Funny how Socket 478's dies... when you don't need them too...
Well - Durban is DAMN hot atm. and my pc has been complaining hitting 70degrees and over. - So this afternoon i had enough, stripped it, cleaned all the dust out etc, added 2 more fans to keep the SATA drives cool...

... System doesnt post. wiggled all the cards - nothing. loosen one clamp on the Cpu fan - System Posts. Close clamp - System posts. do what i needed to do, reboot - system dead. - this carried on for a short wile, and now the pc is DEAD. - My guess, hairline crack on Motherboard...

I've taken the thing appart, removed the retension clamp, checked for cracks on the board, wiggled all the caps to check for dry joints - can't see anything wrong...

Started all this at 3pm, its now 1:30am - given up.

So now what. I don't want to upgrade just yet as i'm waiting for the Quad Cores to come down in price a little... (only one i could find - R10 000 for a cpu - sorry no!.)

What a waste of a Damn good Mobo. Cost me R3600 in its day GA-8I875 Ultra (going on 4 years more less)

So yea... Also looking for a Socket 478 with AGP, Dual SATA & Onboard sound, Intel Chipset...

GRRRRRRrrrrr...

Keep dreaming!. you might get the box the QuadCore comes in for the price of a vintage pc :)

Check for bent pin in CPU - also Flat battery

the funny thing is, i see a lot of 478 mobo's and cpu's around he in jozi, but this is because i help fix and upgrade computers, ya my sisters computers network port died so shes angry at me( it's another socket 478), so i think it comes down to that fact that these systems are getting old and the start5 the get tired. thats why upgrading is the best thing to do,
but it's also kinda **** of hardware developes to suddenly stop making older system because there's a new cpu line thats out. ie, with the amd 939 and the new am2, suddenly they not making any new mobo's for 939 and the cpu's are going down, the same story with the intel 478 and the 775, as soon as 775 came out theu stoped omaking 478 mobo's. now i know that we should upgrade, but if a system is running perfect then say the mobo breaks, then you sitting with a good system but you cant get a mobo so you must upgrade.
it's just crazy in my eyes

If it was only the motherboard, it would have been better already. But in most cases a new motherboard = a new CPU, RAM, cooler, graphics card, PSU (or case) etc.

Only way around this is to buy a brand-name PC (Dell or something) - they'll always have spares available - but for the price you could probably just buy a new PC...

Actually, we can find a brand new s478 mobo in a shop, like VIA P4M800, P4M266A, 845GV, 865GV, but they are not lying at a big shop, try to find them in some lowery shops we never don't like visit.

I might have one for you. A nicely spec'ed Gigabyte mother board.

yea - best way around this problem is to buy another pc or parts - but... as i said, this time of year, better stuff on their way - bad time to buy.

Dell... - *SIES*. absolute trashy pc's. Got tons of them for work - horrible machines!. I will never buy branded pc's. I prefer to build up my pc's - used to be a pc technician years ago - so know my way around a pc with my eyes closed.

board allready on order, waiting for it to arrive - and yes, i was lucky to find one: so they said!.
