Software piracy

So next time I'll buy one duke nukem forever crack, package and copy for 10 of my friends since I've paid for it I can do with it as I see fit :)

Hyperbole, but yeah, that's basically the gist of it :p

One thing I find interesting (or perhaps amusing?) is how often people's personal views are in direct conflict with copyright laws but they don't see it that way.

As I said right at the beginning of this thread, piracy is a pretty grey subject.

But then... we know this. We've been around this argument more times than the sky is high.

Piracy, in this context is the infringement of copyright. He infringed on copyright by downloading an illegally modified version of the software which was also illegitimately provided.

Simply put, he wouldn't have been able to do so without breaking copyright laws, and as such, being a pirate.

That is exactly why I support piracy, I have limited bandwidth so I dont download any movies or TV or games but when I buy retail games I use the cracks so my games dont phone home and can be played offline. Lucky Steam can be started in offline mode as well.

Property is theft

If you were honestly that interested in understanding the pros and cons of it and that it's rarely the great evil it's made out to be, you would've done so. As has been said, there are countless threads on MyBroadband and MyGaming, many of which I've taken part in. We're all just tired of it now.
I am well aware on all the pirate's theories on the pros and the industry's theories on the cons.
There still exists no justification for piracy, no matter how much pro theories you put forth.

And you have a seriously disturbing infatuation with needing to wave around your fundamentalist views.
Piracy is wrong. I air my views on it. If it bothers you that I do so continuously, then stop promoting piracy, and I will have no need to tell you that it is wrong.
Call it fundamentalist all you want, you still have no justification for piracy.

You buy one license for your use. You did not buy 10 additional licenses for your friends too.

So no, it is not the same.

Your views on piracy seemed warped. In one breathe you say buying an xbox version of Halo 1 and then subseqyently downloading a pirated PC version is fine. Then in the next breathe you say that the above is not ok? You do realise it comes down to the exact same thing...

I read the first post wrong. Replying in between work. I did not realise then that it was between xbox and PC.

I see season 2 of Cougar Town is showing soon on DSTV.
*So I'm thinking*
I enjoyed the 1st season so much that I simply cannot wait for it to air on screens.
I pay my R656 a month for Dstv on time...
I think I should download the series and watch it now.
hmmm. is that justified?

Will you download a version with all the ads that will be shown on DSTV?

Good point. It should be illegal not watch the ads shown on DSTV. Much of Multichoice's revenue is from ads, when you change channel or even look away, you are stealing from Multichoice. And stealing is a crime.

If you have PVR should you pay more if you fast forward the ads?

Your points are laughable...

When you pay your DSTV fee you buy a specific type of license. This license includes the ads. You do not have to watch the ads, or you can forward them on the PVR.
DSTV places the program in a specific slot and then sells advertising space in that slot. By downloading the show and not watching it in the time slot that your license dictates, you devalue the time slot and cost DSTV money.

Yes, it is very expensive. Yes, it is behind the times. Yes, the service/timing/pricing should be improved. But that still does not justify you pirating it.

Yes, go ahead. Just do it, already...

How many people actually care about the ads these days?

So lets see...you download it and watch it without ads or watch it on dstv and still don't watch the ads(skipping through channels, FF, Facebook etc.). Whats the difference?

Multichoise sells adds based on the subscriber numbers and the potential viewers at that time slot. and as he has a subscription and is a "potential viewer" they already used his +1 in the numbers stated to ad agencies for the sale of the time slot. Its the exact same formula that billboards use to sell ads. Its not how many people look at the board but how many could see the board if they looked.

Go right ahead and download.

Great, I have DSTV so ufis has officially blessed my pirating of tv shows. Thanks ufis, knew you would come around. :)
