Software piracy

Multichoise sells adds based on the subscriber numbers and the potential viewers at that time slot. and as he has a subscription and is a "potential viewer" they already used his +1 in the numbers stated to ad agencies for the sale of the time slot. Its the exact same formula that billboards use to sell ads. Its not how many people look at the board but how many could see the board if they looked.
Not that simple. DSTV has multiple channels. Buying ads for the 7pm-8pm slot on MNET will have different pricing than for the same time slot on Series channel. So the ads gets sold for a time slot and the calculated actual viewers for that slot and channel.

Taking that to your billboard example. Lets say your DSTV subscription equals travel between Pta and Jhb. The route you travel is the channels. Now I, as a potential billboard advertiser, know that 1 million people travel between Pta and Jhb daily. So I have a potential 1 million viewers for my billboard. But if I then just go and place my billboard on a random route between the 2 cities I may not get the best exposure. I need to know how many people actually take the route where I want to place my billboard.

Great, I have DSTV so ufis has officially blessed my pirating of tv shows. Thanks ufis, knew you would come around. :)
Deductive logic fail.

Exactly and this is done via controlled group surveys, yes I once was part of the group, and seeing that he is not part of the group he still gets calculated.

They give you a "schedule" and ask you at X time what program do you watch with a list of choices. They tally up the scores and multiply this with number of subscribers to use as a number of "potential" viewers.

Edit: my aunt worked for a survey group, was actually quite fun to join some surveys. Personally I like the ABI & Nestle groups the most as they gave you products to test things like taste and designs. Never had a problem with free drinks and sweets.

I've got no issue with software piracy as long as its not for commercial use. If some grom wants to play around with photoshop or something like that in his spare time, of course he's not going to worry about licensing, that would be impractical.

With regards to tv piracy, in this country, I have no issue with it either. We pay through our arses for 'good tv' (ie: not-so-good-dstv), and even then the shows are months behind, and thats if they even get broadcast here in the first place. Too bad.

Music piracy, I'm on the fence. I support our local bands by buying their cd's (although to be honest, I actually think they dont mind piracy, and just want you to listen to their stuff regardless), but it takes a seriously good international cd to get me to buy it. Plus, the stuff I listen to mostly doesn't get imported to SA anyway.

Not exactly. Lets take Grey's Anatomy season 7 as an example, it initially aired in the US quite a while before it showed on MNET but by the last episode, we were a little more than a week behind. It makes sense because in the US in didn't air exactly every week as it does here.

Hmmm, ok, but who the EF wants to watch that?!:p

How are they robbing you? They have a product, a nonessential product (this mean you do not need it to survive like you do, for example, water). They set a price for that product. If you cannot afford it, find another product that you can afford.
But your greed leads you to believe that you have some right to their products.
You are in the wrong. You are the only one doing any robbing.

So piracy is permissible if survival is at stake?

Yes, you can steal water, food, electricity and houses. All depends on where it sits in the Maslow needs pyramid. :-)

We are all guilty of it, and we get punished with stupid ass viruses every now and then. I will hardly call it theft!
