That is a normal gas geyser , not circulating hot water in the tank ?End of the day unfortunately his tests have too many variables to be considered accurate but I'll hand it to your buddy at least he tried and published results - better then the manufacturers
btw - lol I went to check base temp of water to be independentchecked my Gas geyser this time (Yes I have one too
)

Minimums last night were fairly low.
That unit is probably in the shade , hasnt been on in a long time and and still warming up from the low minimums we have had this week.
That is not the temp of incoming water. It is the outgoing water which has cooled down since you used it prev evening
Temp underground does not fluctuate as much as above ground as soil does insulate to some degree so the temp variation between high and low is much smaller
