I always need to expressly spell everything out to you Angelo.

Alex J says what he must on radio, nobody wants to listen to negative radio broadcasts and he is there to provide a positive viewpoint on air.
In his private life he may not support that viewpoint at all and might be telling his kids to leave the country as my parents are telling and encouraging me.
South-Africa has opportunity, I can stop studying and earn a huge salary from either of 4 firms who has given me offers so far and pay taxes in excess of R90 000 a year. I however want a foreign passport when the **** his the fan. I'm also afraid of crime. That is why I'm leaving to find security, I might come back if things start looking better.
I do know that in the long term New Zealand will be a better choice. I wish it wasn't that way, but it is were we stand today.

I think SA is doing well (economically speaking) compared to other developing nation like Brazil, India etc. but compared to the Aussies, USA, Canada etc. there's really no comparison.

Comparing us to ANY country in terms of safety and security and the general social ills I'd say we're the worst in the world. I don't even want to go into the reasons why we're so down in that regard.

Well compared to you guys (I don't really know you guys' ages) I'd say I'm quite a bit younger so the whole work situation hasn't affected me as of yet i.e. AA, BEE and all that crud (yes, my opinion is that it's a piece of crud)so I can't comment there. But when I look at countries like the UK and USA, the general feeling is that they're run a WHOLE lot better than SA and they much safer too.

Addressing the OP, I think those shortages aren't anything to fret over, as said in one of the other posts, all major nations have had shortages of that kind in some form or other at one time or another :) but I think the major signs that this country is failing is the gross short sightedness of our government, they're so hung up on "righting the wrongs of the past" they fail to see that by stuffing their pockets with our tax money they're just putting SA back into the dark ages, something we've worked so hard on getting ourselves OUT of.

The electricity supply to Bedfordview on Johannesburg's East Rand was expected to be restored only on Wednesday now, said Eskom.

The area has been without electricity since 03:00 on Monday due to faults in two 132 kilovolt lines, Eskom said in a statement on Tuesday.

"If all goes according to plan, we anticipate that power will be back by noon on Wednesday," said general manager for distribution in the North Western area Louis Maleka.

On Monday, he had said they hoped to restore power by Tuesday afternoon.

Apparantly Eskom was informed about potensial trouble with those lines a month or more ago by two town counsillers, but they didn't do anything about it...

They asked for a budget to fix it, and then spent the money on personal vehicles.

Serious question ahead - no hidden agenda.

Can someone explain how oil affects the cables underground?
I assume that the substation has oil to keep something lubricated and or cool - but how does a lack of oil there cause an underground cable to break in multiple places?

Oil is a coolant, your PC uses moving air to move the heat away from the components, a power substation uses oil. I don't know why it would be underground. Leakage?

If you know any women (including your own families) and understand that
they have only 4 chances out of 10 of NOT being raped at some point.
This might suggest something to do with the society disintegrating :P

If you have a high wall, electric fence, razor wire around your property.
And 'burglar bars' on your windows. This might suggest something to
do with the society disintegrating :P

If you have access to a private armed militia group to respond rapidly in
an emergency - because you have little or no confidence in the powers
and authority of the legal police force to keep you safe anymore.
This might suggest something to do with the society disintegrating :P

If you can't stroll anywhere you want to, at any time of the day or
night, across at least 97% of the urban/suburban area in which you stay.
This might suggest something to do with the society disintegrating :P

If you know more than two people who've been attacked, hijacked or
burgled. This might suggest something to do with the society disintegrating :P

If you have to worry or be fearful when a family member/partner goes out at
night, and have a regular schedule of needing to call them to check they're
okay. This might suggest something to do with the society disintegrating :P

If you know of more than 3 businesses in your area which have been robbed.
This might suggest something to do with the society disintegrating :P

I could go on, but you get the idea.

The main point is: NONE of these above things, are experienced or are normal
in most other countries in the world. Certainly nowhere in Europe or the USA.

So the real question to ask is 'How and why have you managed to persuade yourself for so long, that SA is NOT falling apart'?

The rape statistics is 1/4 woman as far as I know and 1/4 people have HIV. That is a 1/16th chance of getting the death sentence of HIV after spending a holiday in South-Africa. 2010 tourists better be ready for that, as they would not know better than to venture out in to the crime invested areas.
 
Well atleast we don't need to worry about being blown up by suicide bombers, our buildings don't get flown into (on purpose), we don't emo schoolkids going on shooting rampages and we're pretty well liked by most religious sectors.

I'd say Canada, Australia & most parts of Europe have extremely low levels of violent crime but USA??...c'mon man.

I prefer all that than the crime in RSA. A terrorist attack won't affect me, being forced off the road driving between two small towns in the North West is a problem which did affect my family. We don't travel after dark anymore. It is like living among barbarians in the dark ages.

A school kid shooting other kids is fine, once or twice a year in a country 40 times bigger than South-Africa, compared to the violence our school kids have notched under their belts. Murder, rape and so forth.
 
yeah, one can feel these pressures of SA falling apart from deep inside the core. Makes me somehow doubt that pursuing a dream is fast becoming a taboo topic here. I've never traveled the globe... how is things over seas opportunity wise?

I was really only referring to Canada. There is no doubt that the USA has issues.

Canada is very safe. For example my wife often goes out for a walk by herself and she has never had a problem. We also see many women out on the street alone walking or jogging. Rape does happen here once or twice a year, but when it does, it is headline news the next day and 99.9% of the time the perpetrator is rapidly tracked down and brought to justice.

That is the thing, in Britain it is a nationwide manhunt if 2 little girls are killed by a man. It becomes international news and the killer is brought to justice, along with anyone who obstructed justice. In South-Africa is goes unreported.
