Some SLI questions...

hmmm... you know whats really stupid... the fact that the 8600gts has monster ram, but they don't use a bigger bus, it's said that even a 256 bit bus would cause a bottle neck, but no... Nvidia wants to make crap mid-range cards. but still it does manage to pump out 32gb/s on a 128, so if they had a 256bit it would be double or more, utter retards
AFAIK the main reason the 8600's have a 128-bit bus is so that they could use the same PCB that was used on the 7600's and on the 6600's before that...

it's all about saving money...

lets hope AMD/ATI's midrange cards are better

Also dont forget chaps, its crazy expenisive here but have a look in the USA and see how much they go for there...

I paid R3k for my XFX 8800GTS 320meg card and just saw at www.newegg.com that it goes for R2170 for the same $310 dollar card.

Hmmm the CT 8800GTX goes for 6.5k at prophecy shop and at newegg? $550 = R3850

Someone is shtooping us

not really, but anyway, our tax is what kills us, our government loves taxing every thing that moves, so that they can pay for the low cost housing, and so they can give free electricity to Zim, and the squaters

2) Does SLI'ing two cards basically double up on their specs? So if you run two 256MB, 128-bit cards then you have a 512MB 256-bit gfx setup?

3) Must the two cards be the same exactly? (Can you SLI like a 7600 and a 7900 for example?)

To answer 2): No, it doesn't double up on the specs. Your system will still have 256mb video ram, albeit you'll have two cards. ;)

Depending on driver setting, basically, SLI allows one card to render one frame, and the other card to render another frame. Or one card can render the top half of a frame, and the other card can do the bottom half. Default is to use alternate frame rendering tho (IIRC). You need to fiddle with advanced settings if you want to change the SLI rendering method.

3) With drivers out now, the cards have to have the same chipset. You can use 2x 7800GT's for example (what I have) - it doesn't matter if the clock speeds differ, the faster card will operate at the slower cards speed.

You can muck about with the built-in nvidia driver overclocking with SLI - both cards will be overclocked AFAIK, although I'm not sure how well this would work if you use cards from different brands.

razor i got the same card :) its freakin awesome eh

i would rather pay 3k for my 8800gts than 2150 from new egg because if it breaks there is big problems :)

Cool, thanks for more feedback. It seems an interesting tech , that I am fairly keen to check out at some point. However, SLI'ing two 8500GT's is not really going to be worth it, hey? :p

Still going to save up for an 88-series. I guess I could at some point SLI two of them

Yeah, they will no doubt come out just in time for the release of Windows Vienna (great name btw :p)

I doubt they'll ever come out, I'll stay with XP for a good while yet.

I also like that name, reminds me of the golden age of Windows Cheesegriller :D

Not really?

We pay 2000 more for a gtx here than the chaps in the US of A.
We're being shafted...

Its funny how telkom is related to government with regards to shtooping

I am loving Vista right now. It is pretty, runs a lot faster than my XP set-up did and has only crashed once so far :)

Sure there are a LOT of issues. Like drivers for most things. And the amount of RAM you need to run it properly. Although I have heard stories that 512MB RAM runs it quite well.

I am going to stick with it for now. XP was great, but when switching back to it on my old P3, it really does feel dated..

I sometimes feel that it would be cheaper to just fly to America or Dubai and buy my hardware there :D

True, I loved Vista when I ran it but I need it to run my games properly. It didn't so I thought "Stuff that! I'm going back to XP..." So here I am...
